Looking to switch to BB/PE shop after a year

I recently signed up with a middle market I-Bank in NYC, I had interned for the same bank over the summer and signed up only due to lack of other viable offers..Being completely honest...I did not enjoy working there over the summer and am wondering whether I should try and switch after a year ( basically break the contract after a year ) to either a BB/Small PE shop

I heard of a few people doing this over the summer, does this happen often ? what do i need to do to make something like this happen ?

best bet is to apply when you get that bonus, because thats the time when there is the highest turn over.

I've spoken to a few people on this subject and they've been divided, some say its possible after 1 year, others say you have to wait until your 2nd year. Personally I would say to try after 1 year just in case.

Oh and don't be surprised if you'll be forced to give up a year. (i.e. you'd be a 2nd year at your MM bank, but at <abbr title="bulge bracket

">BB you'd ahve to be a 1st year)

If you weren't able to get in after you did the internship, the question is, what has changed now which is going to make you a good lateral candidate?

Honestly, nothing other than the fact that i have more contacts on the street and a higher gpa.

transition is possible if you're at or near the top of your analyst class at the smaller firm, but you'll really need some personal networks at the BB firm to pull for you. gpa doesn't really matter anymore, but the contacts on the street are definitely important.

how do they find out that you are in the top bracket of your class?

i know a few that have done it. the group you leave is typically not happy and it doesnt make you any friends but your only an analyst so I think over time its not as big of an issue.

so anyone knows how they find out what bracket you are in?
