Manhattan Rent as an Analyst 3

I’m thinking about lateraling to NYC from the Midwest, but I’m worried about being able to make rent. If I came on as a Analyst 2/3 would I be able to afford a 1 bedroom in midtown. I have a girlfriend who would be able to help with rent, but probably only $1k worth due to lower salary. At the current $4k median is this plausible? Given the BB/EB analyst salaries is that outrageous? Our should I consider other parts such as the quieter financial district? Assuming without bonus since that won’t be used to pay for the first year.

Just landed a rat hole south of midtown for an absurdly awful price. With even the smallest studios running north of 2k, with median much closer to 3k, it’s tough. For a 1BR you will be stretched thin, but can make it work. I’m definitely overpaying on my A1 salary, gonna have to get by with a frugal day to day. But that’s NYC for ya. Don’t be discouraged, few years and a few promotions and you will laugh at rent

If you want to live in anything decent or similar to what you’re getting in Midwest, it may be tough

$4k is definitely doable, although it won’t be a “luxury” unit (or similar to what you have in the midwest). I would expand your search outside of midtown. Have you visited nyc and spent any meaningful time there? I find midtown to be one of the worst areas to live in (very commercial, tourists, very little “authentic” nyc). I think you’ll have some luck with UES or UWS and some areas further downtown (Chelsea/flatiron, etc), with the latter being in older buildings with fewer amenities (but in what I consider a much better area). It’ll mostly depend on what your expectations are for “nice” and whether you are prioritizing location or amenities/apt/etc.
