Missing Company Dinner as Incoming SA

So there's a company-hosted dinner for incoming SA/FT this week in my city, and I said I could attend. However, something recently came up, and I no longer will be able to come in. I emailed the recruiter who was spearheading the organizing of the event, but it seems she is currently out of office.

Will I be marked as a no show, and would this damage my reputation with the firm? I know I'm just an incoming intern, but I don't want to come off on the wrong foot. I hope I'm just being neurotic, but idk I'm a bit worried.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, missing a company-hosted dinner as an incoming intern isn't ideal, but it’s not the end of the world if handled properly. Since you’ve already emailed the recruiter, you’ve taken the right step. If the recruiter is out of office, consider sending a follow-up email to a general HR contact or another organizer to ensure your message is received.

Firms generally understand that conflicts can arise, but communication is key. Being proactive and transparent about your situation will minimize any potential negative impressions. Just make sure to express your regret for missing the event and reaffirm your enthusiasm for the internship. This shows professionalism and commitment, which can help offset any concerns about your absence.
