Number of Goldman Sachs Analysts Hired

How many analysts does a major BB firm like Goldman Sachs recruit in North America in a given year? What percent of those hires work in NYC as opposed to San Fran, Salt Lake etc.

~90-120, depending on the year and economic state. ~80% for NY.

Is that across all divisions? Or just IB

That's just IB.

How large is the Sales and Trading (Fixed income, institutional equity) analyst class in relation to the IB group. Would the numbers be the same? About 90-120 per class across the country? Or is the IB analyst class typically much larger?

IB classes are usually larger, depending on the firm's targeted offer rate (S&T is typically much lower than IB). S&T classes at BBs are on the order of ~60-80. Also, S&T isn't spread throughout the country, with the exception of commodities trading in Houston.

I read that there are around 400 partners for Goldman at any point. Say if people are analyst for 3 years, that’s about 360 total analysts in IB. Then there’s 4 years of associate, which say is around 50 each year, so 200. (Assuming everyone makes it). Total 560 grunt level people in IB. How could there be a near equal amount of grunts to partners?

I've never been so happy to see someone reference an old comment of mine.

Impossible that Merrill has 800 research analysts. Citi's research division had ~85 US analysts in 2007ish, down to the 50s now. Even if you count analysts + all their support (associates, admins, etc.), you're looking at ~200 people.

how many research analysts does it take to screw in a light bulb?

The world has changed. And we must change with it.

------------ I'm making it up as I go along.
