Onsite summer program but unable to work onsite - virtual intern seeks help

Hi WSO Monkeys,

Incoming BB IB SA here with start date one week away. Non-US onsite 8-week program.

I'm unable to go to the office in another city due to complex issues (close contact of COVID-19 positive quarantine, city indefinite lockdown, etc.) and my program has been therefore moved to virtual, while there will be ~15 onsite interns. HR said I would receive same projects and review processes as other interns'.

I'm committed to winning a return offer, and I've set up a home office (3 monitors, printer, scanner, 1000 Mbps internet, desktop, laptop). However, I'm concerned because bankers might not trust me with meaningful work (return offer wise), I might miss some in-person events, and facetime is non-existent.

I would be grateful if you could give some advice.

  • First, how to get bankers to trust me? If they don't trust a remote intern, I cannot win return.
  • Second, what in-person activities and events would summer interns typically have and how should I approach them?
  • Third, how to get to know other bankers? Do interns only get to know other bankers working on the same projects?
  • Fourth, how should I ask for assignments, especially near the end of day? I cannot ask every banker if they need help in-person, but obviously I should not email everyone at 1am every day.
  • Fifth, how should I deal with facetime? How should I let bankers know I'm not getting up at 10am and logging off at 8pm?
  • And finally, there will be inconvenience for bankers (can't give me physical copies of comments, can't ask me to print books, can't discuss project details in-person, etc.) and they may be more willing to work with other interns rather than me. How should I solve this?

This is a lengthy ask. Really appreciate the help.

Intern in IB-M&A, hey, look at the bright side, at least you didn't get a ton of monkey shit thrown at you...here is my best guess on threads that might be helpful:
