PIMCO Portfolio Analyst vs BB IBD - Advice

For context in the process for other roles (namely, the Alts/Private strat role) within PIMCO, but was wondering if it's worth taking an offer for the PIMCO portfolio analyst role since I've heard (on WSO so still unsure) it's more of an ops position and doesn't allow progression into the PM realm at the company. Any advice is welcome.

Anyone else can step in here of course, but thought I’d chime in given time spent in the middle office (aka back office but slightly better/more interesting + you’re college educated).

“Portfolio Analyst” is going to be more of a monitoring function. You’ll fill out reporting templates, run numbers on a book of business, maybe do some VaR analysis or other sensitivity. You’d probably be involved in quarterly reporting, rebalancing, and trade execution.

It’s kind of a trick because the above things don’t help you develop as an investor. To become the PM (investor) you want experience buying/selling (underwriting) the primary asset a given Fund manages, whether that is PE, mezz credit, or airplane leases. If you look at the bios of the PMs vs. the senior Ops folks, you’ll start to notice this fact. Hope this helps!

I'm curious why I found some people on LinkedIn who had IBD SA at GS/MS and chose this specific role for FT if its like this

What are your thoughts on the product analyst position at PIMCO? Would it be similar to the portfolio analyst role in being middle-office, and is there a clear path to the PM role?
