Question I got asked in an Informational Interview
Hey Guys - I am a rising junior at a top-15 school going through the IB recruitment process. I was in a friendly informational interview with an Associate at a BB and he asked: why might a PE firm work with an IB on a deal? I gave a partially right answer but still felt embarrassed. We laughed and he told me no worries, just know these questions for potential interviews. So what are the different reasons a PE firm might work with an IB?

Obviously, it’s a sell side deal they may ### sell a business to a PE firm.
When PE firms exit their positions many will hire an IB to sell their PortCo.
A PE firm may hire a bank to work as a buyside advisor when they look to deploy more assets into an existing PortCo through strategic acquisitions.
This covers it, but to expand on #2 exit could mean an IPO of a portco as well.
