also what are the prestigious groups here? Being a balance sheet bank would you say DCM, Levfin?
Nomura is not a balance sheet bank.
OP - are you part of the expansion class?
I am not, what’s the expansion class?
I work at Nomura. I have not worked there long enough to have developed a super strong and informed opinion, and in a couple of months I should have a better answer. The firm is really committed to growing their US IB franchise. I am not sure if it will work, but they really want to grow their US business. It seems like the Greentech acquisition was a good idea.
Turnover among the juniors seems high, but it seems like most of the juniors are transferring to BB which is a good for the juniors, but not great for the firm.
Thank you for insight! Any insight on what their base comp is at the associate level? I know they're an A2A with 100k and 105k base respectively
Thank you for this!
You mentioned that while the firm is committed to growing their US IB franchise, you are not sure that it will work. I am curious what factors have you doubting Nomura's US growth plans?
Additionally, while Nomura might be hiring junior staff have they hired any strong MDs to help with their growth in the US markets?
I do not have an specific reasons to doubt Nomura's growth plans. It is just really hard to grow your business in banking. Over the past 20 years, it seems like a lot of banks have really tried to grow in the US and a large portion of them have failed.
They recently changed their head of investment banking, and I think that could lead to a lot growth, but we will see.
Weak in US apart from acquisitions (Green Tech and Wolfe Research), alright in Europe, strong in AeJ (top 3 in credit if your in markets), BB in Japan.
Equities isnt too strong, and they have a small balance sheet so their cost of capital is high and they can't compete on price with banks like JPM.
One of the only firms without volcker rule so they still market make instead of being an agency broker.
Culture is a weird mix from traditional Japanese and aggressive Lehman. Decent firm but obviously not a GS or JPM.

If I plan on staying in banking for the long term, would Nomura be a good option, or should I try and lateral to a BB or EB
How about instead of asking about the prestige of the firm or rankings, my thought is that YOU should be the one to make the firm go up in the rankings and have prestige.
What I find to be interesting at Japanese banks is that when shit hits the fan they'll let go lots of people, and then a few years after the market recovers they'll slowly start to build back their team. My point is don't be misled by this growth message. Banking is banking, and after a year you'll have the ability to go wherever you want if you present yourself well.
I don't remember all the details, but I have heard culture isn't the greatest and that there's a lot of dead weight there. Please do some research on your specific group.
How would you recommend one should research their group at Nomura? Internal Networking? Are there any resources you would recommend?
Look for people on Libkedin who have moved from that bank. These people are usually honest about their experience, or will tell you enough for you to figure it out for yourself.
I was considering a role in pricing once, and thanks to a stranger on LinkedIn i realized it was a job with horrible job prospects and would be something i would hate doing, all thanks to reaching out to that person.
I know a non-IB rainmaker at Nomura NY office. Easily the biggest douchebag I've met in finance.
In London, Nomura is very decent! People get a lot of exposure as teams are smaller than BBs. I've seen many people exiting to BBs and EBs. Strongest team is Infrastructure.
But you can exit to BBs and EBs from literally any relatively well-known MM. Don't see how that speaks to Nomura's strength.
