Recent PE recruiting from GS?

Just wondering if any current/recent-ex GS analysts could comment on the nature of PE recruiting from the firm? Do analysts have to do it under the table? How did you manage to do it while being staffed on live deals without notifying your managers? Is placement still as good as it was prior to the new policy/outlook? Is placement/the policy equal across NY/SF/LA/Chi/Houston offices? Thanks in advance.
