Rising Junior Worried About Future (Breaking into IB)

Basic resume for reference:

Rising Junior at Duke, no connections, not diversity

Econ (concentration in finance) major, CS minor: 3.81 GPA

Summer 2022 Federal Reserve Intern: Working with competitive analysis of M&A between banks/holding companies and assessing financial health of said institutions (my only somewhat relevant experience)

Previous Experience: Waiting tables at several restaurants (not relevant but still put on resume)

Several at university clubs (1 leadership position), and one Summer NOLS course (backpacking in the wilderness for 30 days)

I know my resume is kind of funky, but I'm currently trying to break into IB and I'm seriously concerned because I don't have an IB offer for next Summer (assume it's going to stay that way and I know Junior summer is usually a big deal) so I'm starting consulting recruiting to see if I can at least land something. Curious on next steps I should take other than prepping for technical and behavioral interviews, and reaching out to current employees. Any help would be much appreciated.

I got some followups from some banks as a current M&A Finance at Uber this summer (also rising junior this fall). To be honest, just keep networking and applying and see where it takes you. If anything, theres also big tech that recruits for biz ops, finance, etc so you'll have other opportunities is how I see it. I'm like not a huge target school but definitely recognizable.

While I can't offer much advice beyond what's already been posted on the forum, I can offer solace.

I broke in two years out of uni, from a non-target, with a 3.30 GPA, and all my internships in PWM. In the two years post-grad, I worked as a personal trainer.

If someone like me can do it, you'll have absolutely no issues. Just work hard, stay humble, and trust that everything will work out. It always does.

(I hate that I have to state this, but someone will ask. I'm a straight white male, and didn't break in through the nepotism slingshot. Mind-blowing, I know.)

rising diverse sophomore at your school — utilize the alum network, especially the b-school alum, take advantage of off-cycle internships. if you’re dead set on IB, you can delay your grad date by one semester to reclass to 2024 and have an extra summer.

Duke has a pretty solid alumni network, so make sure to take advantage of that. If you really want to get into IB your top priority should be to land an IB-related internship for junior summer. You have a few options. 1. There are probably some regional boutiques who will take on a summer intern. 2. Some banks, even BBs, continue to recruit summer interns past the "on-cycle" deadlines, so keep networking and you may see some opportunities open up. 3. Consulting recruitment is also a good idea. 4. You can consider either delaying graduation by a semester and re-applying or 5. Stay in school for 1 more year and get an MSF. Of course, recruiting FT is also an option.

There are a ton of guides and anecdotal advice out there regarding starting late/recruiting for full time without a junior year internship. Certain WSO discussions and M&I pages can be really helpful for your situation. I'll link two of them here and you can continue to look around for more info. Best of luck!

Same position literally, I have started looking at smaller banks and boutiques for the summer and even small PE firms.

Does anyone know who’s still recruiting or any leads?
