Summer 2025 internship choice

Don’t want to say too many details but I currently have two offers for Summer 2025. One is for a BB in NY. The other is a small, boutique IB in my hometown. Relatively unknown but they are working on growing to do larger deals. Pay is equal but my hometown has lower cost of living and no state income tax. My dream is to do PE in a few years, so, if you were in my position, which would you choose?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key considerations for your decision:

Big Bank (BB) in New York:

  • Pros:

    • Valuable Network: Being in New York, you'll have access to a vast network of professionals in finance.
    • Brand Name: A BB on your resume can be a significant advantage for future PE recruiting.
    • Front-Office Role: Likely to provide a more structured and prestigious experience.
    • Better Pay and Hours: Typically, BBs offer competitive compensation and structured work hours.
  • Cons:

    • High Cost of Living: New York is expensive, and a significant portion of your earnings might go towards living expenses.
    • Intense Competition: The environment can be highly competitive, which might be stressful.

Boutique IB in Hometown:

  • Pros:

    • Lower Cost of Living: Your hometown has a lower cost of living and no state income tax, which means you can save more.
    • Greater Responsibility: Smaller firms often provide more hands-on experience and greater responsibility.
    • No Relocation Needed: Staying in your hometown means no need for relocation, which can be convenient and less stressful.
  • Cons:

    • Less Prestigious: A boutique IB might not carry the same weight on your resume as a BB.
    • Limited Network: The networking opportunities might be more limited compared to a BB in New York.

Recommendation:

Given your goal to transition into Private Equity (PE) in a few years, the BB in New York might be the better choice. The brand name, extensive network, and structured experience at a BB can significantly enhance your profile for future PE recruiting. However, if you value a lower cost of living and greater immediate responsibility, the boutique IB in your hometown could also be a viable option.

Ultimately, the decision should align with your long-term career goals and personal preferences.
