Technical Prep for Public Finance?

Does anyone in Public Finance IB have any advice in preparation for upcoming internship? I rarely see any forums about pub fin and was curious if there are any pub fin specific resources besides reading market news that would be helpful for understanding financial models and other technicals (ex: bond math). What would be the equivalent of practicing financial statements analysis, building out a DCF, and creating a pitch deck?

For Public Finance IB, preparation involves a mix of technical skills and understanding the unique aspects of the sector. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some targeted recommendations:

  1. Excel and MS Office Proficiency:

    • Public Finance often involves responding to RFPs (Request for Proposals), so strong skills in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are essential. If you're not proficient, consider practicing these tools as you'll need them for modeling and presentations.
  2. Bond Math and Quantitative Skills:

    • Since Public Finance deals heavily with municipal bonds and other fixed-income products, understanding bond math is critical. Focus on concepts like:
      • Yield calculations
      • Duration and convexity
      • Pricing and interest rate impacts
    • Resources like the Rosenbaum book (Investment Banking) can provide foundational knowledge, especially in the fixed-income sections.
  3. Financial Modeling:

    • While Public Finance may not involve traditional DCF models, you should still be comfortable with financial statement analysis and cash flow modeling. Practice building models that focus on:
      • Debt service coverage ratios
      • Revenue projections for municipal projects
    • Utilize WSO's financial modeling templates to get hands-on experience.
  4. Understanding Public Finance Specifics:

    • Dive into the unique aspects of Public Finance, such as:
      • Government procurement rules
      • Tax-exempt financing
      • Infrastructure project funding
    • Reading about high-yield municipal bonds and leveraged loans can also be helpful.
  5. Teamwork and Big Picture Thinking:

    • Public Finance requires collaboration and the ability to see the broader impact of financial decisions. Develop soft skills like teamwork and strategic thinking, as these are highly valued in the field.
  6. Market News and Trends:

    • Stay updated on municipal bond markets and government policies affecting public finance. Regularly read financial news and reports related to infrastructure and public sector funding.

By focusing on these areas, you'll be well-prepared for your Public Finance IB internship. If you're looking for additional resources, WSO's financial modeling lessons and templates are excellent tools to refine your technical skills.
