The New School summer housing?
Has anyone ever done summer housing with The New School? I've never heard of them but found them through a google search. Rates are comparable with NYU, but the location is better for where I will be interning. I'm considering the 20th street location (300 West 20th Street), and would like to hear about safety/night scene/transportation/other relevant issues. Please share your experience if you've lived there/know people who've lived there. Tried to google some reviews but couldn't find any. Thanks!
curious about this as well.
anybody lived at new school before?
i'd like to know as well. it's a lot cheaper than EHS, but for some reason it's more obscure..
i agree it doesnt seem like anybody knows about it/has lived there, but the pictures of the dorm on their website look nice enough
I spent a summer here. They put you down in the financial district, which is convenient if you're working down there. It was like a block from the Federal Reserve, 2-3 blocks up from Wall St, and like 2-3 blocks from Stone Street (a popular bar/restaurant area), as well.
Rooms are nice and are suite-style, although the kitchen appliances don't work (intentionally...something to do with the fire code). Don't pay extra for a single, though. Many of the "singles" are actually just beds placed in the living room/kitchen of the suites. You would still share a bathroom with at least 1 other person, although many of the "singles" have a room with a double attached to the suite, as well.
Rooms are only available to students with internships, so there are pretty much no New School students, which is good because they're all hippies. A good number of the kids staying there were bankers or professional-types ,although my roommate was working in fashion and fit about every stereotype of a guy who works in the industry. He was nice, but his personality didn't mesh well with me. I think I was unlucky, though. Most of the kids were cool/normal.
There is a doorman. It felt safe. There are resident advisers who go to the New School and are familiar with the area. They hold social functions weekly, which are usually well-attended if you're interested in that kind of stuff. Overall, the housing was pretty good. Just be aware that when you pay for a single you may not be getting as much privacy as you might have anticipated.
Sorry, just realized you were looking at the 20th street location. I don't know anything about that one but I can't imagine that the quality differs significantly between them.
What I don't get is why NYU and Columbia kick you out August 7th. New School is a little better (the 14th), but still not late enough to allow you to stay through an entire internship. Do SAs just find apartments normally?
