What do I do now? - Specific recommendations?
It looks like I've been shut out of all my applications for summer internships. I am from a non-target. What should I do now to increase my chances of landing some interviews for full time roles during the fall recruiting season? Does anyone have any specific recommendations as to what else to apply to now?
Thanks.
Apply to boutiques and try to get in any way you can. Some experience is better than none. If that fails, then try to get into a Corp. Dev. role at some reputable firm, preferably acquisitive ones or ones selling assets (if possible; more unlikely for the latter as they are trying to cut costs rather than add additional ones in the form of an intern).
If you want to get your foot in the door of a BB and set yourself apart from the masses of other ambitious, highly qualified alpha males applying for internships, you should apply for an administrative position. Being a secretary would look really good on your resume because it shows you think outside the box, you get all these points for "corporate sensitivity" and you still get to work with all the BSD's (if you are really lucky, get them coffee too!)
would that work?
No

Why the hell is everyone getting so sarcastic all of the sudden? These threads used to give nothing but good advice. Anyways, I agree with NoTears. Try to get into a boutique. In fact, bust your ass to get into a boutique. Good luck.
Haha Guyjer, I grew my landscape business from $3K annual revenue to $35K annual revenue in high school and IBD interviewers were at least a little impressed...
Datdude - get some relevant experience (financial modeling, comp analysis, etc.) in any internship you get, and you can still be competitive for full-time hiring next fall - regardless what these posters say you don't need to summer at Goldman to work on the street post-graduation.
Fraser24gt - I agree. I think many here are just too insecure to give good advice and feel better about themselves screwing with people anonymously. Let's clean it up - FUCK with people on your own time.
Part of what makes the board fun is the sarcasm / false pretentiousness by the posters. Nothing wrong with a little humor here and there.
I think NoTears' advice is spot on.
I am now a full-time first year analyst in S&T Global Markets. I went to a great school and had great grades (even SAT's) but had never even taken an econ class in my life. I graduated and was offered a job in my firm's legal department as a paralegal (legal admin) because I didn't know if I wanted to go the law school or business school route. Six months later I moved to the sales desk as a sales assistant, then got my Series 7 and 63, and seven months after that I was promoted again and joined the '06 analyst class.
I am serious when I say that there are many ways to get into the analyst class besides campus recruiting. I admire all these undergrads who know exactly what they want to do in college, because I sure didn't know! Now, I am slightly older than the other analysts because not only did I join the analyst program a year after I graduated, but I also took off a year during college and lived in Brazil. However, it has all been worth it. Don't close your mind of to anything- getting shut out of a silly internship does NOT shut you out of ANY kind of career- what they care about most in the end is what kind of person you are and what kind of worker you will make. I ended up getting this job because they felt my time off made me a more well-rounded person etc. Best of luck to you- you will be fine.
Wow, cool story.
Amb05, that's the kind of story I wanted to hear when I joined this forum. Really love it. Amazing. Thank you!
