What Trends/Questions Should I Bring to My FIG Interview for Discussion?

Hey All,

I know this is an annoying question, but I'm really stoked to be attending a superday interview this Friday for a MM FIG group, specifically focused on regional banks. I've been searching high and low for information on trends within commercial banking that I can bring to the interview, but right now I'm at a completely shit regional boutique with 0 deal flow so i want to make sure I come correct and don't sound like an idiot.

If anyone knows of any good topics surrounding market/M&A/regulatory/operational trends that are hot topics for those in FIG capital markets communities these days I would love to go in with some good questions in my back pocket. Thanks!

Tread carefully on the fintech stuff unless you know it’s covered out of FIG and not Tech.

also, when people talk about the “hot” sectors where there isn’t actually a lot of dealflow you risk giving the impression that you’re not really interested in the sector.

this doesn’t have to be complicated. Look at the company’s website to see the recent fig deals they’ve done. Look up the rationale for the last 6 or so and that’ll give you a pretty good idea as to what’s happening in the sector.

Interesting thing to consider is how many banks have been making up for low interest margins by doing high loan volumes on the back of low interest rates. NPL ratios are very low because the housing market is booming and there were a lot of financial aid measures in place because of Covid. But these measures are being phased out and housing prices might not go bbrrrrr forever, so regulators want to see good care in the credit risk department

Other contenders;

  • Basel IV
  • Life insurance book transactions
  • Digitization in the banking sector

To find some info on most FIG topics, just go to the relevant regulator's website and see what their regulatory priorities are.
