Commuting from Philly to NY
gotta gig in nyc thinking about making the commute from philly to nyc. anyone do that on a daily basis on here, or know the best way i was thinking about doing the amtrak but its 1200 a month...crazy any alternatives, suggestions?
Michael Mullen did that grind for his first few years lol. I think he took the bus everyday (he said it took about 2 hours each way). Don't know anyone who does it now though. Just be prepared to wake up at 4am everyday.

got a guy in my group who comes daily from PA, gets up around 430am. Only reason he does it is because he lives with his parents in a really nice house. Sleeps on the train to catch missed Zs.
I personally would never do that. When you spend as much time at work as we do, commute has to be under 30 mins imho.
Commuting at least 2.5 hours a day including transit in the city is stupid, move.

I commute from NJ to midtown and that alone is a pain in the ass every day. If you want to commute from home for a while to save some money, then give it a shot I guess. I'd estimate by week 2 you'll realize how miserable your life is. If the job is what you really want just find a place and rent. $1200/month for amtrak?? You can find an apartment for $900/month
Too far. If you have family there, you can probably visit them on the weekends pretty easy, but stick within Subway/PATH distance of work if you are working in S&T, risk management/analytics, or perhaps research; walking distance if you work in IBD.
One Saleslady I know lives in Weehawken. I have told her repeatedly that she is crazy. It takes her 45-60 minutes to get home at night.
thanks guys well i'm not in Sales and trading or equity research its for a corporate finance role at really good firm, the amtrak is about 1200 a month. has anyone done the amtrak its only an hour and half, which isnt too bad, what do you guys think?
yeah pretty much would be paying 1200 less the gas it costs me to get to work now here in philly at my current job (granted i stayed here) so about 700 is what i'll be paying i mean i think its worth it for the opportunity just not a big fan of living in nyc.
id rather live in Liberia and have a 10 minute walk, then spend 60 hours a week on a train to get to a place of employment.
60 hours where did you get that from? its an hour and half each way..so 3 a day 15 a week

Plus think of the gym savings, since I'd suggest you strap on 30 lbs of interceptor body armor for your "walk." By walk of course I mean running as fast as you possibly can.
yeah you got that right, thats another 50 bucks a month you can potentially save towards other endeavors
Why wouldn't you just get an apartment for less than $1200 per month. You can live in NJ and commute if you hate NYC so much. No one here is going to tell you to do the Philly commute - it's absurd.
well my better half has gotta decent gig in philly still so one of us is going to have to commute and it'll most likely be me. so gotta take the apt in jersey out of the equation.
Could you guys split the difference and move to Princeton or Edison NJ? Bout 45 for each then.
yeah see i don't think its worth the move out to central jersey since the fam is all in philly and we're pretty settled there.
So what it really sounds like to me is that you want validation for the decision that you have already made. Come back and tell us where you live in 6 months. My guess is that you will either be working back in Philly or have a different address.
Bingo. If you already knew your answer, why did you come here? Regardless, I am not going to affirm a foolish move like this. I don't think anyone here is. Sorry we can't give you the affirmation you wanted on what I think you'll tell your kids was a "life lesson" you hope they don't repeat.
Bolt Bus (upscale Greyhound) goes from NYC to Philly for around $30 R/T. Prob takes a little longer than Amtrak. They can often be late though. I would prob try to find a place to crash during the week, if possible. Some people wouldn't mind having a part time roommate. Check CraigsList.
Like others said, it sounds like you've made up your mind. Good luck with that. Do people do it? Yeah, because the train station is pretty busy in the mornings. At least you can sleep on the train, but have fun with train delays during the winter.

Yeah I can't say anyone is going to support this buddy...Get an apartment in any of the neighboring places (hoboken,queens,brooklyn, EVEN manhattan) at 800-900/month and you are saving yourself MAJOR headaches. Its just not worth it. Even if you stay at this place M-TH and commute fridays only and stay with the better half for the weekend, it will still be better than paying 1200 dollars (are you kidding me?) to commute 2 hours each way.

Not sure why you took a job in NYC if you want to be in Philly... then again why would you ever want to live in Philly over NYC in the first place?
What you should also consider here is how being married to a train schedule is going to potentially impact your degree of success. For any new job, and for any career in this business for that matter, the one truism regardless of the scope of your work is that you will work long hours. And if you're an analyst and your boss needs you to stay later to get something done the answer that you have to catch a train to PA is not going to impress anyone. In fact, to be successful at most finance firms in NYC you should look to be first one in and last one out, and if you sign up for that kind of commute then you're basically signing up to be the opposite. AND, you're going to miss out on going out for drinks with your coworkers when they get together, which will make you feel like an outsider as well as potentially keep you out of the loop on what's going on inside the company. The real relationships are forged and the real information exchanged during happy hour.
It goes without saying that this is a tough job market, especially for younger people, and the result is often times having to take a job that's not the ideal and, in your case, living somewhere you don't love. But get over it, because most successful people have had to do it at some point in their careers. That commute is crazy and seems unnecessary. You will be unhappy and will either quit your job or get canned within the first year. Not to mention, you will have no social life, and no time to hit the gym so just think about what kind of life that means.
