Navigating UBS Risk Management Offer

Got an offer from UBS, upward move but previous role was in capital markets at Mitsubishi UFJ, got laid off and applied like hell. Originally they said they were considering more experienced candidates but I guess their first choice traded away.

My title would be "Authorized Officer", but the Job Posting says "Structured Products Market Risk Specialist" (previous role was in ABS/CLO origination). Are these guys pulling one over on me? Everyone with the title "Authorized Officer" on LinkedIn seems to have a very different background from me, education and career-wise.

I know UBS is weird with titles, but I've never heard of this shit. Are they pulling one over on me? Am I going to end up being some kind of contractor or consultant? Trying to get a good feel beforehand because RBC Capital Markets will be getting back to me (hopefully with an offer) sometime tomorrow.

Thanks!

blows my mind people don't keep their anonymity online... Someone from UBS could literally see this post and change their mind on your offer.

I can't tell you what the AO title implies (does raise a small red flag imo), but this sounds like a semi-front office to middle office move (origination -> risk). Don't get me wrong, since risk can be a solid career, but you may want to simply ask HR for more details.

Thanks, appreciate it. I was thinking about asking HR. I hear you on the anonymity thing, but they know I'm waiting on other offers and bid appropriately. Having interviewed with the entire risk team, they most likely frequent http://quant.stackexchange.com/ when it comes to online forums. Will definitely think before I post details in the future though.

Late response but hopefully will be helpful to others in the future. The "Authorized Officer" title is the rank in between an Analyst and an Associate Director. AO titles are for non front office roles only, and was applicable here since you will be in market risk management. Frankly the AO title is just a way for UBS to keep MO/BO folks grinding a little longer before having to pay them more at the AD level. In front office, you jump from Analyst to AD directly.

It's confusing but here's how UBS titles work: Analyst Authorized Officer (non-front office roles only) Associate Director = same as associates at other banks Director = same as VP at other banks Executive Director = same as Director at other banks MD = self explanatory

It's always funny to me when VPs from other banks join UBS as a Director and think they were getting a promotion.. except Director means VP at UBS.

Question, I read on here before that the hierarchy structure at UBS is somewhat like: analyst - 3yrs associate - 6 months paystub then- associate director - 3yrs director - 3yrs ED MD

Is this still accurate information??

Much appreciation friend
