I'm curious to know if banking has a fair amount of people who like anime? Prior to covid, I would pretty much never disclose that I watched a ton of anime because I know I could get really mixed reactions, but now I find myself caring less and less what other people think of me for it because I love it. Starting FT in NY later this year and wondering if I should still just never bring it up?

Really don't think there is an issue. Attack on titan has gone mainstream at this point so I would assume that some bankers have looked at it and other anime.
I love anime (note: am not in banking, but am in finance) but in all my time at work with literal anime art commissions at my desk just waiting for someone to make conversation about it... no one has known the characters/ what anime is (oh except some guys in a more tech-oriented group, go figure). RIP. The closest I've gotten to coworkers having similar nerdy hobbies is board games :) Found a coworker who also enjoys online board games and made plans to play over the weekend.
I would say if your top criteria for a job is that coworkers share nerdy hobbies... probably better shot in CS haha

As a fellow man of culture in banking, don't bring it up unless you are BOYS with the other person. Definitely an asymmetric risk profile if you talk about it at a social outing with your group or casual coworkers, you're much better off sticking to sports or traveling as conversation starters. I have noticed that its starting to be like a "cool" and "interesting" thing to talk about in circles of college/high school age kids today as well as on the internet, but banking is one of the most stuffy and old school cultures you could ever find. The only exception is DBZ. If some junior person tries to give you shit for vibing with Goku then THEY are the weeb. My California-valley-girl-brunch-going gf fucks with DBZ.

When I interned, there was this one intern who said he had anime under his interests and got asked about it during the superday. During one of the intern events after a few drinks, asked him about anime and started going in about the shows I liked. All for him to end up saying "bro, all I watched is Naruto".

Cowboy Bebop is the one I always recommend to friends who are new to anime. I am surprised you don't have Attack on Titan on there.
I really didn't like the pacing of S3 of AoT which is what knocked it out of my top. There's a lot of honourable mentions such as AoT, Hunter x Hunter, and Code Geass that I left out for conciseness.
Cowboy Bebop is so disappointing though. The show set themselves up for a great 200+ episode run with a rich universe where they could dip into each character's backstory every now while tying it to a larger theme/plot but then are forced to wrap the show up in a rushed 2-3 episodes.
I like it, I was suggested it as my first anime but it was build, build, build, OVER. I dont understand the long term appeal.

After that dumpster fire of a last season my dude? There was one good moment in the last season where Haise sees Touka in the cafe for the first time after he lost his memories but after that, I was completely lost for the rest of the season. First season was fire tho.

I've seen fate zero and UBW, fate zero was insane but UBW was great graphically and had some heartwarming moments. Tohsaka best girl :). I've tried watching the new heaven's feel movies as well but I literally had no idea wth was happening since they skipped all of the exposition.
Death parade is cool too, really liked the aesthetic. I'm embarrassed to say but I didn't put Evangelion because I've yet to watch it. It's too hard for me to go from watching modern graphics to watching old stuff but I'll find the motivation someday haha...

I gotta agree with the consensus here. If it comes up in conversation among colleagues, sure, mention it, but anime has grim and dark shows like Monster to light hearted shows like Fairy Tail. Then there's... other stuff. I'd say mention it in conversation if someone happens to mention a show you've seen or are currently watching.
I am also an anime fan, no problem with that if you do. But same as the others, I don't talk about it to my colleagues unless someone opens up about it. I love Studio Ghibli anime

If you're asking this, it seems like you care to an extent what your employer and co-workers think and you are aware of the perception of anime. As someone who doesn't watch anime (I've seen Dragonball Z and Naruto), my first reaction is a bunch of busty Japanese girls animated characters. Weird. Can't speak for others' first reaction, but I'd tread lightly as others might have a similar first reaction.
Anime is way more mainstream than it used to be, but among people that *don't* watch it the perception of it is still pretty bad. It gets very unlikely that someone is an anime fan when they're 25-30+. This includes ASOs, VPs, MDs. I wouldn't discuss it at work unless you're good friends with the person.

YYH is just nostalgic for me. I'd say it's pretty similar in feel to Hunter x Hunter.

Also forgot, Slam Dunk. Much shorter, thus much less famous than others, but the quality of characters and storytelling is over the top. It makes you want to play basketball. Very emotional, competitive, hilarious and for once the protagonist and their team actually do not win that much. It's a story of struggle, desire to get better, fierce rivalry. Truly amazing.
The only sports animes I've ever seen were Haikyuu and Hajime no Ippo. I honestly loved both of em, Haikyuu made me want to become a volleyball player and Hajime no Ippo made me want to take up boxing.
I heard great things about Slam Dunk and Kuroko's Basketball.

Honestly, I feel like the storytelling, pacing and character development are all incredible. I finished season 1-3 almost entirely in one sitting.
It doesn’t really fit the anime theme - it’s similar to Avatar the Last Airbender where it’s more of a Western styled cartoon that mirrors anime.
Being into anime isn’t a big deal when talking with coworkers. Obviously, don’t show up day one and only talk about anime, but I wouldn’t write anyone off for enjoying it. You gotta put in the work and show you can grind and have a semi descent sense of humor. Basically, be a 360 degree value add.
To put it into perspective before covid, I listened to/talked about metal at work, talked about gun laws being too restrictive, and frequently called some coworkers anti-American communists (including superiors). Fuck, I even stopped wearing deodorant to the office. If anything it just added to my ‘brand.’ Just gotta do it with a smile, get your shit done, be willing to listen to your coworkers own goofy shit and be a pro with the clients.

Watched a lot of anime in middle school, then stopped when I got to high school. Then picked it back up during the pandemic last year. Rewatched naruto and then got into Attack on Titan. Gotta say, AoT may be one of the best stories I've ever experienced, and its a shame most people will just write it off since its anime.

Yes, like you said anime has officially hit the mainstream. Was a stat from WSJ last yr, as of Sept over 50% of NFLX HH had watched anime that yr...probably >60% by end of year. That said, while in past 1-2 yrs it's been massively de-stigmatized there are some people who still have that stigma. I'm very, very confident that the stigma will be totally minimal in a decade but today there are some morons who will judge you for it. I have no problem with people who dislike anime, but it's annoying as hell if they try to judge you for liking it. At the office, which is already a judgmental, sterile setting it's probably not the ideal place. Or rather if you make good friends with someone, then you can probably bring it up. Wouldn't bring it up as a first talking point though within first couple interactions of chatting / hanging out with someone. Like I said, in a decade you probably could bring it up in a first meeting but we're not quite there just yet

It's sad but anime is still viewed as weird by the classic banker. The only sort of sci-fi / whimsical thing you can mention on a resume or in conversations that would fly with bankers nowadays are Marvel movies. Even then, you can only talk about them in terms of the choreography and plot instead of the lore and superpowers.
