Barack Obama: A case study in vanity and futility

Yes, I decided to watch the president's jobs speech last night before tuning into the much more important and enjoyable NFL game between the packers and the saints (the NFL is fucking incredible!).

In watching Obama's speech, I was once again reminded of how self-righteous and vain this man is. Yes, you need a healthy amount of ego to become president, but Obama really takes the cake. First of all, in terms of substantive policy, he did not offer anything new. Just a smaller version of his failed stimulus, with a price tag of $447 billion. Speaking before the joint session of congress, with the exception of the state of the union addresses, is NOT a typical routine and should be reserved for only the most important and solemn occasions. Recent examples include Reagan's historic 1981 economic plan and Bush's speech right after 9/11. Obama, the pontificator in chief, summons congress for the 2nd time in less than 3 years, all so he can deliver a hackneyed liberal "jobs" program that is bereft of ideas.

And certain lines, like mentioning how Warren Buffett wants the government to help him pay more taxes, is downright comical. Seriously. The president really thinks mentioning that sanctimonious billionaire will help his cause? I laughed my ass off when I heard this, and a bunch of republicans did as well.

Second, Obama was downright ANGRY during his speech. He reminded me of an angry toddler who is frustrated that he can't get what he wants and repeats his demands incessantly. Does Obama really think yelling "Pass the whole bill now!" will move congress or actually promote economic growth? It doesn't matter though because Obama's vanity and self-indulgence does not allow him to see outside of himself.

I warned my friends back in 2008 that Obama will prove to be an incompetent disaster. Sadly, it's worse than I ever imagined.

"First of all, in terms of substantive policy, he did not offer anything new. Just a smaller version of his failed stimulus, with a price tag of $447 billion"

I had to quote that. This is the 1st thing that popped in my head when I watched this. I don't think he could be any more ignorant on business.

This whole policy of trying to fix the system is a joke. We won't be getting back to the "boom" years of the mid 2000's for a long time. The whole era was built on cheap credit and inflated housing etc. etc. that simply is not available anymore.

He needs to level with the American people and tell them (us) the truth: life's going to be tough. It's going to suck for years ahead. People are going to lose their jobs. We need to save, live within our means, and let the system work itself out. Fix the tax code, cut the crap spending, and let the market work itself out. We didn't become the world's richest country by having the government tell us what jobs need to be created and how we can have a better economy. Good luck Mr. Obama.

ANT:
I keep hoping for change. That's what happens when you elect a guy with no experience all because of a cheap tag line. Obama is worse than Carter.

10 million jobs were created during Carters 4 years, more than 10 times the amount of jobs under Bush's 8.

Why are you guys ragging on his experience? Bush had 8 years and was an awful president. The same can be said of Reagan and Bush's daddy.

Carter is widely considered to be one of the worst presidents.

Eokpar: And the inflation was in the double digits and there were mile long lines to get gas which you could only get 5 gallons of every other day. I dont know about specific job numbers so I cant say, but the carter years were not good, no two ways about it.

Nobama88, you are confusing being defeated in a general election with bad economic policy.

Cater was a horrible president. Same will be said for Obama.
Both will be considered below average presidents but both are, or will be, fantastic former presidents.

Better president than any Republican who's been in office in the past 30 years.

According to what metric? Your own, meaningless and arbitrary subjective opinion?

Open to conceding on Dubya but no way on Reagan.

The Reagan 80's produced one of the greatest periods of economic expansion in history. Reagan restored American morale and optimism after the terrible 70's. He restored America's standing in the world and hastened the collapse of the Soviet Union. Reagan cut the top marginal tax rate from 70 to 28% and ushered in deregulation, which unleashed the potential of the American economy. I can go on about this, but basically it's laughable that you think Obama has done a better job than Reagan.

Cut taxes while increasing spending on the military, setting the standard for the way the GOP does things now (increasing deficits). There's the Iran contra affair and him supporting rebels I'm Afghanistan (Hi Al Qaeda). His deregulation eventually led to the great recession. More on his spending, despite GDP growth being substantial Reagan spent 22% of GDP, the average is 20%. Under his watch the deficit went from 26% of GDP to 44% (this accomplishment is matched only by GWB). The guy preaches fiscal conservatism while spending like a maniac. His ridiculous policies that rely on GDP growth to be palatable continue to be preaches by the GOP to this day, one of the biggest reasons the party is a joke.
