Do you consider yourself Conservative, Moderate or Liberal? What makes you define yourself as that?

Just immigrated to the US, and I am not familiar with American politics.

I come from a place where I am told to leave politics at home when you come to work, but I was surprised to overhear quite a lot of discussions about politics here.

I know that different cultures have different ways to categorize one's political leaning. So help me out here.

What makes you conservative/moderate/liberal in this country? What values do you believe in?

Moderate.

I'm all for republican economics. But I think 420 should be legalized. And am pro-life.

As a male, I am pro-choice. I don't support abortion but I believe that every woman has to make that choice for herself because it is her body and her life. You're going to tell Becky to keep that baby and ruin her life even though she cannot support a child just because you believe that it's wrong? That's like all Beckys saying they're really against vasectomies or some shit like that and enforcing it on all of us even though it does not affect them.

You are missing the point. Pro-lifers believe life begins at conception (there is no consistent point when pro-choicers believe life begins; and if it's only after birth, it is absurd, as 5 minutes before birth that child is no different). Because it's a life at the moment of conception, pro-lifers believe murder is worse than inconveniencing Becky for some number of months.

"studmonkey" You're going to tell Becky to keep that baby and ruin her life

This is where you are wrong. Ruin her life? What are you talking about? You can't say that with any kind of surety.

Fiscal conservative. Moderate Social Liberal.

Pro free market. Less regulations. Lower taxes.

Pro Gay marriage. Pro Choice. Legalize Weed. Pro death penalty. Very Pro gun. Anti Immigration.

The terms you brought up were extremely helpful. I think I see where you are coming from especially after doing some research. I would like to hear more about your views on guns, coming from a place where I never really get to see any guns, I do feel threatened when I hear news about mass shootings. Can you elaborate a little more on that and help me understand?

Moderate. Was firmly conservative before but I find myself becoming more and more liberal since I moved away from my small town and made friends who weren’t of the same ethnicity as me. I’ve noticed a similar trend with other conservative friends who’ve also moved to bigger cities. They’ve tended to become much more liberal the longer they’ve been exposed to people of different backgrounds.

I think the biggest issue with US conservatism today is that it’s often based on fear or mistrust of “the other” (minorities, gays, people of a different religion, immigrants or whoever else it might be), and a big part of that is lack of meaningful exposure to different social groups. I’d bet most conservatives and forever-Republican voters on this site grew up around mostly white people, often of a similar socioeconomic status.

I consider myself a moderate. I always felt more conservative compared to my peers growing up in the northeast and now feel more liberal compared to my peers living in the south.

Problem is, plenty of people who aren't moderates consider themselves one.

I lean conservative on economic issues, but since there isn't a conservative political party in the United States anymore, I have to vote on social issues, so I am voting Democrat for the foreseeable future.

"justphresh" The Tea Party took the conservatives and turned up the crazy to 11.

Not really. The Tea Party took conservatives and exposed the real man behind the curtains. Fiscal conservatism was and is a myth. "Conservatives" aren't interested in small government or balanced budgets or anything like that. They're interested in corporate giveaways and big government for their constituents. In other words, hypocritical Democrats. With a massive dose of race baiting and white supremacy leavened into the mix to win the votes of people who would have qualified as Dixiecrats 75 years ago.

Progressive (but don't fit the box completely)

Pro 80% estate tax on every dollar over $50 million Pro choice up to third trimester Pro all drug legalization Pro phasing out all fossil fuels by 2030 (but not pro Green New Deal as it is too complex and all encompassing) Pro same sex marriage Pro Death penalty Pro strict separation of church and state Pro $15 min wage Pro federally mandated (3 months?) maternity / paternity leave Pro Medicare for all Pro path to citizenship for DACA Anti military spending Anti semi automatic gun ownership Anti private prisons Anti forced prison labor Anti student loan forgiveness Anti corporate spending on elections (overturn Citizens United) Anti electoral college

"TooMuchLeverage" I am only pro $15 min wage at the company level - NOT government imposed.

Does inflation mean nothing to you?!

I'm not for or against it, but "only at the company level" means it isn't a minimum wage, it's a chosen wage.

It's not just about inflation - higher minimum wage kills small business growth and raises unemployment or lowers workforce participation (American unemployment statistics are 1984 level lies at this point). The truth is that some people's labor is not worth minimum wage - they must get experience and skills first, and that may only be possible by working for less.

They won't be able to compete. A universal $15 minimum wage will kill small business while large corporations with the CapEx budget to push increased automation will replace humans with technology and replace full-time workers with part-time workers.

The intention of a minimum wage is a good one, but is poorly thought out and will not have the positive benefits people think it will.

Strangely, the same people who push for a $15 minimum wage also encourage unlimited immigration into the United States which pushes labor supply up and market wage rates down. It's almost as if they don't really care about workers but instead despise white conservatives.

Largely socially conservative but a bit of a hybrid. My views align most closely with the pages of City Journal and First Things and line up well with columnists/writers like Patrick Deneen, Sohrab Ahmari, and Ross Douthat. I like some libertarians like Arnold Kling.

Pro-tradition Pro-hierarchy Pro-family Pro-religion Pro-work Pro-localism (and to a lesser extent nationalism) Pro-redistribution Pro-Keynesian Pro-environment Pro-criminal justice Pro-marijuana legalization Pro-land use reform Immigration restrictionist Anti-identity politics Anti-administrative state Anti-human genetic modification Ambivalent about guns
