Fun Cars For New Analysts?
Incoming analyst. I was wondering if anyone ended up leasing or buying a car soon after starting their job. My current car is an absolute beater and I’ll be looking to upgrade pretty soon after I start. I’m looking at leasing a new Lexus IS350 or GR Corolla but curious if any monkeys had any suggestions.
You can find absolutely gorgeous used Porches that are 7+ yrs old with reasonable (50k mileage) for very reasonable prices depending on where you live. Don't lease. Leasing is a complete scam and genius move on the part of the car company - getting you to use financing over the largest deprecation stretch during the life cycle of a car. Don't do it.
Leases are cool if you're a senior executive and your company gives you a few grand a month to blow on a car and you always want the latest/greatest, or if you own a business and can use it for tax purposes. Agree otherwise, owning/financing is much better. Leasing is literally jut eating all the depreciation yourself
How is the reliability of those older Porsches? Wouldn’t mind scooping up a used cayman.
Very good! First car I bought myself in 2017 was a 2009 aqua metallic blue Boxster convertible with 40k miles on it, have put probably $10-15k into it for maintenance/aftermarket parts over the years and she still runs great at ~110k miles, albeit it's not been my daily driver for a couple years now. It was cheaper than a new Honda Civic at the time, sounded amazing, and chicks love it when you put the top down while driving along the beach. 10/10 would buy again.
The best things about Porsche are 1) their engines are top tier so you can easily expect to get to ~200k miles on them, and 2) as a brand they don't do much to the bodies over time and thus stay pretty timeless, its the internals they're constantly updating. So as far as most regular folks know you're just driving a Porsche, they'll have no idea what the year is (obviously a tape deck is a giveaway). Also there's such a huge aftermarket for parts that if you're a gearhead (I'm not but I'll tinker), you have so much to choose from and the car is so ubiquitous most mechanics in my experience will know how to work on them if you need help.
Civic Type R, Acura Integra Type S, M240i, BRZ ts
This model R179 with the chrome finish is pretty sweet. Pretty spacious. Has some onboard entertainment too. Men with boomboxes who do acrobatics on the poles. Madres with their kids selling candy. Mariachi bands. Everybody dresses as Santa on one day that I always avoid. Pretty nice.
i think used taycans have good leases, they've also depriciated like crazy
the other day i saw a 2022 with 6k miles for 52k, probably could negotiate further. I so wish i lived in USA
idk about fun but theyre electric and have mediocre range so that might be fun, EVs are extremelyfast from traffic due to insane torque and well its still engineered like a porsche.

Have not thought about the Taycan at all but might give it some thought now. I’ve driven one a couple times and found it be somewhat enjoyable and it’s overall just a comfortable car.

This is not financial advice and depends on whether you're an enthusiast but if you did get a GR Corolla it may work out better to buy the car instead of leasing. It isn't the type of car I would lease due to it's relative rarity and demographic.
That’s true. I’m a little concerned about how Toyota handles its warranty since apparently pushing the car may break it.

I hate the new body style but absolutely love the F87 so that might be in the cards.
Miata’s are a great fun sports car
Yeah for girls and Whatever1984
If you're a car guy, don't go cheap on something that's supposed to make you happy, get an older used AMG of some sort.
I agree with the other comments on avoiding leasing.
Are you living in a city and just using it on the weekends or will you be commuting in it each day?
Tesla is reliable and depending on where you are has 0% apr loans available for financing with a 7k tax credit plus in the US.
Porsches are fun, and reliable.
Real advice though is if you’re in a major city like NYC or London you’re better off saving your money and getting a car if you really want as a VP. Really has little use right now given the hours working. Just rent a car on Turo if you really want or need a fun car for a weekend.
