Industry - Season 2 Episode 8 recap
I was half watching, what ended up happening? Anyone have any theories on why Harper got fired, was it payback, did Eric want to save her from insider trading, what was the deal?

I think it was both, Im sure he remembered when she stabbed him in the back with the Felim situation, and I think he took note of when she was so nonchalantly throwing DVD and Rish under the bus in that meeting with Adler - I think he also somewhat cares about her and saw her getting more and more reckless, probably leading to him to view her as a threat to herself (insider trading) as well as others (backstabbing)
Agree - it's all of the above and the show has been slowly building to her going full Icarus, and basically diving into the sun for a full self immolation.
I think the moment he decided was in the Adler meeting - when she didn't just take out DVD and Rishi, she cut their throats simply because she could. It was shameless, cold and absolute desolation just for the sake of it. I'm not sure she was emboldened by being able to help Bloom manipulate markets - but she sure embraced 'nothing left to lose' in that meeting.
For Eric's part - it's not a selfless decision, as clearly she's a reckless threat to him and the longer he associates himself the more bridges get burned that he can't control. That said I do think he made the choice to help her - bring her back from the cliff, and at the very least keep her out of a much bigger mess. Someone had to check her and he was the one that ultimately held the cards to do it.
Loved it, the finale.
Watch season 1.
yeah but he could have taken her out at any time, why now?
Bloom, incident.
As Rishi said, "You don't shiv the shiv."
OI cunt - it’s spiv the spiv btw
Rushi, has some of the best ground comments.
Can someone remind me please when did they find out about her transcripts originally?
Where does the show go from here? Focus on different characters?
Eric found out at some point in the first half of season 1 and covered for her, I dont think anyone else knew
Thanks. Harper clearly didn't watch Suits to know how to deal with such a situation
Season 1. Eric, tells her outside the building while both were smoking.
We are still not sure Season three will happen.
Good. Means it wouldn't turn into Billions 2 where it just lost the plot.
Surprised no comments about Yazmin or Natalie
Also, why is Harper the "it" girl. Why does everyone sleep with her, like I wouldn't sleep with her the night before my wedding, and what is an ED(DVD) doing sleeping with a girl that far below him. That is also classified as rape or SA, given his position of power.
The blow, alcohol.....Same for Yazmin.
I don’t think the show is about Harper. The three main characters all have sketchy relationships. Yes she has the most screen time but my view is that the second season is more about the characters and how their personal relationships influence how they deal with authority figures in the workplace. I read an interesting article in the FT about how how baggage from personal relationships can show up in the workplace which is the basis of my theory.
Harper seemed like she came from a manipulative family where she was the black sheep and her brother was the golden child. She’s narcissistic and is alway trying to manipulate every situation. She would put herself first in every single situation. My view is that Eric, her parental/authority figure in the show , actually cared for her and knew she was on a downward spiral and cut her loose. Notice how Eric visits home and is unable to connect with his two young daughters and so to fill this gap he tries to connect with Harper
Charles and Celeste come across as narcissistic. But I don’t think Yasmin is. She’s just naive. She longs for better relationships and assuages the emotional pain with substance use. Celeste gave her attention and Yasmin became infatuated with Celeste. She craves attention from a parental figure which made her vulnerable to Celeste’s manipulation. Notice how Celeste made a slip, “ I can’t wait to WORK on you”. Yasmin challenged her authority figures and they both discarded her. Its also interesting how when Kenny started treating her well she became borderline hostile towards him.
Robert seems codependent and has mommy and daddy issues. He mentions that his mom died. He has a personal and professional relationships with a much older women. Nicole even calls out his mommy issues in front of Venetia. This is straightforward. He challenges Nicole about being a predator but the relationships stands because it serves his emotional wound. He lets Yasmin use him as well. Him and Clement also had a father son type of relationship.
I feel like Gus is the only normal one in the show. Gus tried to manipulate Aurore but she just discarded him in the end. I’m not sure who manipulated who in this case but in the end he chose Bloom as his authority figure. He served Bloom well and Bloom rewarded him with the cool job.
Its also interesting how Harper seemed to be the most capable but in the end she ended up without a job. Robert and Gus looked like they were floundering but in the end have jobs.
thank you for the thoughtful reply.
So you think Eric cut her loose because she is a liability...? Even though seconds before he said he would fire himself.
Yes, it was getting too much plus Eric wants to keep working. Let's see what happens next season if there is one.
I'm curious to see if Adler or how the bank even let them cut Harper though. She is the one that guaranteed Bloom, and by extension allow for the creation of the "super lean team" in London in the first place. Without Bloom, as the show was portraying, they just weren't competitive enough in the generating revenue. I know the HR issue is huge, but given Pierpoint culture, would've thought for sure Adler or whoever executives up there will bury this with HR.
It's supposed to be ambiguous. When you get axed, you don't always get closure. And then also, after you have been manipulated, you feel confused. The writers want to mimic those feelings.
When they walked down the hallway to the hr room you overhear “ We want Pierpoint to be the leader in ethical investing”. Eric also says in the elevator that he’s doing it for her. It could also be because Eric felt like he couldn’t control her. There are a lot of conflicting data points here.
I think season 2 was better than season 1 but the show still isnt very good
Eric and Rishi are the best characters I think. Maybe we can get some good scenes with them in season 3 but I bet S3 will probably still focus on Harper and Yasmin stories which have moved away from finance and become very personal
