Is It Okay To Exercise At The Work Place?
So I started a new job yesterday. Today, I started to do my normal routine where I get up every 2 hours and do some push ups at my desk. I only do like 30 every time, and it take 2 minutes. Within 10 minutes of doing them, someone next to me had reported me to our manager for 'inappropriate office conduct'. My boss did not have a good reason for me not to do short exercises at my desk and just told me to stop. I have never had a problem with this, usually people support it.
I value a healthy workplace and I think it should be okay for people to do monitor their physical health as long as it doesn't disturb other peoples' work. What do you guys think? What is your routine if you do?
you need to read your audience...this is just not socially normal for lots of people. while you can't control how other people feel...how people feel affects their work performance, and regardless of right or wrong, you don't want to appear to be causing disruption. If other people aren't also doing this with you, then i would suggest doing your exercise privately....either outside...or in an office or conference room...or if there is a company gym..then use that.
lots of people take a smoke break every 60-90 minutes...they walk outside, and come back refreshed...you can do that...but instead of smoking...do lunges for 60 seconds...and then 30 pushups.
Out of sight-out of mind seems to make sense here for you
Yea that’s definitely what I’m going to do. I don’t feel like putting up a fight with HR. I was just surprised because this is a company that spent 10 minutes at orientation telling me how they encourage employee wellness.
I also don’t understand why one person’s complaint is more important than me doing what I need to do to maximize my ability to contribute to the company.
If they contribute more to the company and work better without you doing anything, it's in the company's best interest to make that happen.
I've got resistance bands under my desk that I'll do calve extensions with.. but that's the extent of in office workouts. Also note, no one in the office can see the lower half of my body.. thus the out of sight out of mine frame fits here as well
Interested in this. How'd you set this up? My calves are falling behind badly (lol), and I'd love to be able to work them while I work.
Buy resistance bands on amazon. A lot of people use them for assistance with pullups. Fully stretch the band out. Fold it in half. Put the midpoint on your knee, then scoot it up your thigh a little bit. Insert your foot at the bottom through the two loops that should be there, trying to get the majority of the band under your toes, not the arch or heel of your foot. Once in a decent position, hit calf extensions focusing on expansion and contraction. If you have it set up right, you should be able to get a full extension of the toes, and the band should rest over your thigh with ease, allowing you to continue working as normal.
Cause it's kind of a bitch to explain. Take a paperclip. Open it backwards until it is fully open. Pretend that is your resistance band in a really narrow oval. Fold it back back toward the original position to get a 90 degree angle. If this paperclip was the band, your knee will go at the vertex of that 90 degree angle. Keep folding back to regular paper clip. Your toes will go where the two loops towards the opposite end of where the vertex was. With bands though, these loops will be equidistant from the vertex, where the band should be on your knees.
If that does explain it, should me a DM and I'll text you a picture. Cheers
Your coworkers probably go to Planet Fitness and hit the Lunk Alarm
It is pretty weird for some dude to drop down and knock out 30 pushups at their cube - especially day 1 of a new job. It is also weird to report someone for doing that. I can only assume that everyone who works there, OP included, don't have the best social skills.
I go to the gym and try to live an active lifestyle on the weekends like a normal person
My last internship was with the same company, just a different office and they encouraged us to work out at your desk. They make it clear in the company culture that employee health is a priority. I just assumed it would be the same and I was surprised about someone reporting something so menial and it being handled weirdly when they could've just asked me to do it somewhere else.
Also don't knock it before you try it. It really makes a difference to get the blood pumping when you're not feeling motivated or staring at the same thing for a while. But looking back it at it was probably pretty weird to see some kid randomly start knocking out pushups lol.
it's okay if it doesn't distract you from work
Hi @tudorg, To my point of view, doing a little exercise at the workplace is actually fine. Some of the top MNC's wants employees to do a little stretching during working hours. Don't feel bad about it just continue something simple without grabbing other's attention!
Unless Michael Scott is your boss I'm not sure this is a good idea...
You don't want to be the sweaty guy in a suit.
To be fair, 30 push ups shouldn't be enough to break a sweat
