Jon Gruden Resignation (NFL)
Jon Gruden (Head Coach of the Vegas Raiders) just resigned after racist, homophobic, sexist, and otherwise vulgar emails were released from 10 years ago. Anyone else thinks it's absurd? Like I get the emails are bad but its from 10 years ago and players have beat their wives with a stick and only been suspended 2 weeks.
He's the leader of a team made up of predominantly black males and the NFL's only openly gay player...what did you think would happen after those email leaked? It wasn't even 10 years ago, there were still egregious emails from 2018. I'm not a fan of cancel culture, but this is not that.
Why is it absurd? If you think a league comprised of 70% african american players are going to play for a coach who issued racist sentiments as recent as just 3 years ago, then that speaks more about you than it does about cancel culture or whatever you're trying to insinuate.

I agree with the economics perspective, I am not even sure how can anyone be on a finance forum and does not agree. If someone generates 10 dollars of economic profit and does an action that is going to generate -20 dollars of economic profit this person is probably going to be fired, whatever the action is. This is economic equilibrium, although these do not say anything if it is right or wrong, companies do not have morality. I am pretty sure that a lot of people were fired because they were openly gay 50'/60'/today in some parts of the world years and the net profit would be negative for the company kept them, I do not think that these are right morally tough.
If you think about it from a financial perspective it makes sense:
Coach saying racist things to black people will hurt the team. Black players may feel the coach thinks he is better than them and perform worse. Second of all, millennials and gen Z don't watch traditional sports and watch e-sports and having a guy like this may turn them off. All of it means less money for the team.
This is literally a Billy Maddison response. I don't think there were two sentences that connected together in this entire response. Hell even parts of sentences didn't connect logically.

Racial tensions impact team performance -> less money

Conservatives have turned "cancel culture!!!" into "none of my actions should have consequences and I should be able to be as big of a dickhead as humanely possible without suffering any repercussions"
The more legitimate counter is that conservatives, at least in this arena, don't share the 'holier than thou' perspective that fans of cancel culture display. If you are going to have this argument you must argue in good faith. If everyones texts, emails, phone calls, jokes, etc from the past 10 years were leaked and cherry picked - with zero context - the worst of it then Gruden will look like a saint compared to 99% of the population.
It's just like that 'locker room talk' stuff with Trump. No whether or not a POTUS should talk like that is up to you as a voter. But it's eye rolling when liberal athletes like Lebron came forward saying theyve been in plenty of locker rooms and havent heard talk like that. Complete BS - if you've been in any male dominant space (weight room, locker room, fraternity, friends, club house, etc) you will have talk like that and it's guy code that it's also entirely tongue in cheek.

You are 100% correct. It is an effort to preserve a 1950s mentality in which racism, antisemitism, anti - you name it, was commonly practiced amongst many different types of people. Calling people out for their bad behavior wasn't a major thing until the civil rights movement. In a way, using the term cancel culture is a symbolic attempt to voice opposition to the civil rights movement. However, the genie is out of the bottle and putting her back in would be extraordinarily difficult.
Does anyone actually believe it was really about the emails? We're talking about a sports league where a decent chunk of the players are violent criminals and where owners and players have been implicated in prostitution, money laundering, bribes, and other crimes.

Certainly someone has an axe to grind with him, released them and torpedoed him. But that's what you get when you run fast, hard and seem unafraid to piss off or alienate people you don't like. Not hard for me to imagine he has enemies.
But this is what you can't do as a leader - that's his weakness. Vulgar comments, locker room 'talk', clear lack of respect across the board that you are UNAFRAID to put in written communication. That you KNOW could be released or leaked. How stupid are you? You are on TV constantly and one of the higher profile people in the NFL where the overwhelming majority of players are African American in a culture that is extremely sensitive even to things that aren't blatantly racist, sexist or homophobic - and this is how you conduct yourself?
This is his fault. It's not society, it's not the players nor does their criminality have anything to do with this - he lost that locker room, that organization, that league and his job because he couldn't control himself or challenge his own views.
I am amazed that people think others are saying this isn't his fault. When people are merely pointing out that this is very suspect from the standpoint reasoning when compared to other things people get accused of in this industry. No one said it is okay. It is almost like political ideology has created strawman arguments for the opposing side that seem so real to believers on either side that the only thing that is ever actually attacked are the strawmen.
I don’t think it’s just the email itself. Let me put it this way — if he was willing to say those things over email to other colleagues, imagine what he says in private. For all we know, he uses offensive language more often than he says his children’s names. I do, however, think that he should take a jab at DE shaw or SIG. I can tell he has great potential to succeed using ML and big data.
WSO users be like "I wouldn't hire someone who use pronouns in their signature because that might turn clients off" but can't fathom why a team would fire a coach who said racist, homophobic, and misogynistic stuff.

I'm not making a judgement on whether its right or wrong. I'm just pointing out the (obvious) business perspective. No shit the team owners don't care what he says. They do care about the image of the team though.
Difference being one is public while one was intended to be private between friends, but was leaked intentionally for likely political (not right vs left, but someone with axe to grind) reasons. That said yea when the private becomes public you are in trouble - but that is a clear difference

My football coaches said way worse to me when I was 10 years old, to my face. I wouldn't think the players care, but maybe they are soft nowadays.
The message is clear... anything you say (even out of context), even if it was from 10 years ago... can and will be used against you.
