Recent Grad Sues College for Tuition

This is priceless.

Trina Thompson, a recent graduate of Monroe College in the Bronx, is suing the school for the $70,000 she paid in tuition because she hasn't found a job yet (she graduated in April) and "the school hasn't done enough to help." Absolutely classic:

http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local-beat/College…

On top of her unemployment woes, Trina now faces mounting debt from student loans.

"This is not the way we want to live our life," her mom told the paper. "This is not what we planned."

Oh, really Mom? Because the rest of us have been planning for this life-altering recession for years. You didn't get the memo?

Good luck with this, honey.

"They have not tried hard enough to help me," the frustrated Bronx resident wrote about the school in her lawsuit.

"She's angry," said Thompson's mother, Carol. "She's very angry at her situation. She put all her faith in them, and so did I. They're not making an effort.

so who's the idiot? the college marketing guy for soliciting false advertisement or the dumbass chick for believing him?

If she was serious about getting a job, she wouldn't be publically suing her college. Who the hell is going to hire the girl now? I hope she gets that 70k back because no responsible business is going to bring her on.

A totally frivolous lawsuit, but it is surprising that colleges, especially the ones that DON"T advertise on the subway, don't do a much better job of preparing people to get jobs. They don't need to turn into vocational schools, but most career services offices are under-resourced for the job they need to be doing. They may have nice, well-intentioned people there, but they don't have the background or skill-set to give people the specific advice they really need to be competitive for the jobs they want. That's why there's a need for a WSO, Gotta Mentor and others.

You know, the very fact that she's stupid enough to do this further substantiates how useless that 'college' is; which sort of makes her not stupid. Uh-oh....circular reference!

70k in student debt doesn't mean someone actually spent that money on college. For all we know she bought an Acura bc she figured her degree would pay off asap. Since student loans can't be thrown out in BK court, up until this year you could borrow until you were blue in the face. I know people that used student loans to pay for engagement rings, cars, furnitures you name it.

Another gem, from CNN this time:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/08/03/new.york.jobless.graduate/index.html?i…

As Thompson sees it, any reasonable employer would pounce on an applicant with her academic credentials, which include a 2.7 grade-point average and a solid attendance record. But Monroe's career-services department has put forth insufficient effort to help her secure employment, she claims.

She suggested that Monroe's Office of Career Advancement shows preferential treatment to students with excellent grades. "They favor more toward students that got a 4.0. They help them more out with the job placement," she said.

lol... just took that off the tuition website for monroe.. but seriously, even without seeing the info it was kinda obvious where her gpa falls.

but seriously(2), career service centers are a luxury. we don't have them much in israel and people get along fine. those that don't find a job like telemarketing or something else low on demand. it's like our neighbors who keep waging war on us, lose, and then whine to the UN about us not giving them back their land when clearly they could have ended up DEAD. but i'm digressing.

i resent that, you cocky whatnot yourself. america's great. you people are probably our last defense in the sellout we call the UN, and taxpayer dollars certainly do help. on the other hand, lots of israeli projects that could have earned us the same money get shot down by US admin coz they endanger american exports - ie the israeli lavi fighter jet project, various military cooperation projects etc. it's a two-way relationship marcus. if you meant something more substantial, please give us an example, i can't just recite the entire israeli history for you. just to recap tho, in 48, without a standing army, we faced off 5 arab nations' armies alon. in 56 we did most of the fighting in sinai against egypt, and our allies werent even american - it was the friggin french and brits, tho they limited their efforts to air and sea. in 67 america was even against our fighting and in the end we had to do everything without the slightest support. in 73 the US helped in curbing the commmies, then again we curbed the commies' influence in the mideast. and now that we want to curb the iranian nuclear armament, it's your new saint-goody-tooshoo-president that's trying to talk to an irrational homicidal maniac who's pointing missiles at the whole world, instead of just letting israeli fighters use american carriers and do the dirty work ourselves. no, sir, you have it wrong. american help is much appreciated, but we've always had our own wars and we've almost always fought them mostly ourselves. if someone pitched in, it was for selfish reasons, as always. i won't even go into the western impotence with dealing with the holocaust, when it was already obvious that millions were being systematically murdered, no, that war was also "fought" alone.

but let's leave this to a political forum. if you really want to discuss this PM me. otherwise i suggest you try and tune down your own puny cockiness. it degrades people's opinion of you.

I bet this is the first of many ridiculous lawsuits that people will come up with to try to get out of debt during this recession. People can get pretty desperate when money becomes a serious issue.

And when it comes to the entitlement issue, I definitely agree that way too many people still have this type of mindset. One of the main benefits of this recession is that it is forcing people to start taking better care of themselves and protecting their assets.

We're in a country where people sue McDonalds for "making them fat" and win so I guess it wouldn't have taken long for a retard with a 2.7 GPA to try suing a school for not getting them a job. The world needs to crack down on lazy idiots like this...

I am not here to defend slackers but let's not judge everyone by their GPA. Everyone doesn't come from the same circumstances and some people choose easy breezy majors just to be able to look good on paper although they did nothing for 4 years. There are spoiled rotten finance majors out there that get 2k from Daddy Warbucks every month and all they have to worry about is school. Of course they are going to have a 3.8 GPA. I graduated with a 2.9 and it took me 5.5 years to graduate. From the outside looking in that may look like a slacker but if you take a closer look you will see that I worked 30 hours a week and dual majored in Chem Eng and Econ. A 2.9 in Engineering is probably the equivalent to a 3.9 in Finance. Unless anyone here worked almost full time and/or majored in something truly challenging like Physics or Engineering, I just don't think it's fair to judge someone's intellect by their GPA. Judge this poor girl for what's really stupid...suing a school lmao

Isn't Monroe College the one with all the ads on the subway? Pretty sure she has a case, iirc I think all of their ads insinuate that you'll get a job by going there.

Good point

I'd believe a 3.5 is 'probably the equivalent of a 3.9', but a 2.9 basically means 'more Cs than As' and that's just actually just not very good.
