Should I expose her?

One of my classmates from grad school was caught cheating during a final exam. Ordinarily, this would result in the individual failing the class. However, the professor gave her a “slap on the wrist” and passed her. She claimed that her English skills were not that great and that she didn’t realize that she was not allowed to use her notes on the final. She speaks fluent English and completed her undergraduate studies at Columbia. Clearly the English language barrier excuse was bullshit. She now works at a private equity firm. Should I expose the cheater?

No, just live your own life. If you send in an anonymous tip, they won't take you seriously. If you send it in with your own name, now you're "that guy" and no one wants to work with a snitch. And if the professor let her off, who are you to pass judgment and try to ruin her life? Not to mention, if the incident isn't recorded on her transcript, she technically wasn't caught cheating.

If she hasn't learned her lesson and still tries to cheat her way through her career, it'll catch up with her.

I understand that the situation might leave a bad taste in your mouth, but don't be salty. Leave her be and go on your way.

Look, I get it. I hate cheaters just as much as you or the next guy. But I don't know if going out of your way to ruin her career just as it started because of an incident you weren't even involved in is just either. And if you have trouble letting something even as trivial as this go, then you're going to hate seeing how many unjust acts go unpunished daily in the real world.

I know someone who sent a blackface picture in a club groupme with 70 people. She's going to MS. Can't believe nobody ever exposed her.

yeah, no offense but u seem like a sore loser wanting to snitch because she has a good job. It is not your business just let it be lol

No, stay in your own lane and rest assured that poor character usually catches up with those who have it

Who would you file a complaint to anyway? Your school? Her workplace? Do you know how many crazy scorned ex-girlfriends send scathing emails to HR trying to get their exes fired? I’ve had more than a few buddies quaking in wait for summons from HR and nothing ever came to fruition. Such an e-mail would probably be more of a hassle and dismissed than anything

I understand the resentment & bitterness of knowing that she has got away with this. Everything is so unfair, right? Understand that life is not fair. She has got away with it and it is unlikely that there will be a karmic retribution in the future of her life where she will get her comeuppance. She will probably go from success to success. If you tell on her it’s not that you will be a snitch you have nothing to gain from it. You are just doing it out of an idealistic principle because the unfairness of her getting away with cheating has offended your moral sensibilities.Let it go. Life is not fair.

Not sure why everyone hates snitches so much...he is not the one who did the wrong thing. Think about the whistle blowers. They expose scandals that are on much bigger scales. I don't understand. Nobody likes snitches? Well if that "snitch" is doing the right thing, s/he should gain respect. I'm prepared for all the MS. Get around the prototype thinking from high school.

High school thinking? I think it's you who needs to realize you live in the real world.

Bitch you can get KILLED for snitching. Doesn't even matter if it's white collar snitching, you don't think something can't happen to you when you tell on someone? Consequences everywhere honey.

Ah yes, all those examples of white collar workers riding up and icing the people who snitched on them, white collar workers are super dangerous

You telling others that they need to live in the real world is laughable when you sound like you have no real world experience yourself

It would be one thing to say "consequences everywhere honey", or "expect backlash for snitching", but to act like you'll get iced over a snitching on someone for cheating on a test is about the dumbest thing I've read today

My knee jerk reaction is to tell you to go fuck yourself but maybe there can be some value in a thought experiment. Let's say she landed at a regular job that pays 45k instead of PE, would you feel the need to go above two layers of authority to expose her then?

It seems like you have a desire to inject your version of the truth, unrequested, but I want to understand your motivations before I judge too much.

Just had my trade dispute rejected by Schwab for a loss of 35k. This single issue alone should be a gigantic red flag to anyone who trades on their platform. If they have a system error, and you do not video record your trading (they actually said this), they will not honour their fuck up. Switching everything away from them. Fuck this company.

confront her about it if it really bothers you. but she sounds like a real piece of work so I do agree that eventually it’ll catch up to her.

prepping for MS

all this “snitches get stitches” BS is absolutely laughable. most of the keyboard warriors would shit themselves at the first real threat of interpersonal violence and run back to their daddy’s beach house.

moreover, i fundamentally disagree with the notion: holding people accountable should not be discouraged, it should be encouraged. yes, there’s a way if going about it (address it directly to the person who is a dirtbag), but leaving no room for discussion because “snitches get stitches” is the wrong answer

Were you both interviewing for the same job and she got it over you? Every student has cheated at some point or another. In the real world that’s called using available resources (this does not include breaking the law, but unfortunately have to point things like this out nowadays because everyone is a keyboard warrior)

There is a serious issue with the younger generation where they feel it is appropriate to ruin someone’s life because of a stupid thing a person did at an earlier point. The current political environment and media (both conservative and liberal), make this even worse.

This former classmate will have 0 impact on your career. It’s on you to be successful and make the most out of your career/life, not worry about what other people did or did not do to get where they are.

Why tf is everyone ganging up on OP? Shes the stupid one dumb as fuck who can’t cheat and then can’t lie to save her ass. OP I changed my mind if you want to snitch on that stupid cheating liar just do it but make sure to see it through to the end. How are you going to prove it anyway? What outcome do you think it will realistically have based on just your word on events cos looks like prof was ok with it? I think if you want to do something you should hold the girl ransom to the info you have on her. She will probably leave / breakdown of her own accord.

I don't understand how this is a question. The teacher didn't even care. If you are going to report her, you should also let us know who you are instead of hiding behind an anonymous account on WSO. The world is not fair - just focus on yourself vs. these petty things

I think right now, you're acting like a bitch and need to grow up. Her life has no effect on yours. Let it go.

I would look at it this way chances are the professor knew and was just pushing the girl out because either he was tired or did not care enough. Second thing it could be the trying to meet a certain quota having a number of students on the pass list and just trying to push everyone who is borderline passing and mix it in with the hard workers. Now that being said there is a good chunk of people that cheat and move on and later on are caught because they don’t know how to function without cheating and they fall. The flip side of this depending how grave the situation is you should let it go now say a year or two from now this girl comes to your firm and in someway tries to mess your career up then the gloves come off and you expose her and flush her down the toilet.

dude why do you care about some else’s choices so much jeez focus on yourself and maybe you won’t feel the need to rat someone out even if they did something and already got caught!

Don't be a dick. How would you like it if someone exposed you for saying something like this on a public site?

Will update my computer soon and leave Incognito so I will disappear forever. How did I achieve Neanderthal by trolling? Some people are after me so need to close account for safety.

WTF is this narcing bullshit. What would you gain out of torching this girl? You don't think PE funds cheat anytime they can when they know they won't get caught all the time? WRONG.

Narc's suck, it's almost as bad, if not worse than the original crime committed. The only thing you'd accomplish is looking like a little douche by trying to expose her. Her PE team would tell you to go pound sand and mind your business. If what she did was really that bad, it was between her and her professors, NOT YOU!
