Ski resort passes while IB in NYC?
I picked up snowboarding during business school, so I'm considering a Epic/Ikon/Indy pass for next season. I'm going to be a post-MBA associate in NYC, so looking for thoughts on how realistic you're able to get enough weekends out to slopes in Rockies/WC or Northeast to make a pass worth it.
Any passes work best for NYC-based or better to pay as you go based on timing? If pass is worth it, does getting one without restricted dates make sense?
Cheers,
Can't imagine it would be worth it to get Epic/Ikon living in NYC. I live in Denver and know several people who won't be getting a pass next year because traffic is so bad on I70 lol
If coming from NYC for a long weekend or two it might be better for me to go to EGE anyways. Part of trying to figure out if one pass is better than another, like Ikon having more UT options which are easier to get to from SLC, but trade off of not having something like Hunter NY.
I just did 5 days at Vail and took Pegasus for flight out of DEN which wasn't bad, but no weather issues day I left. Flying into EGE was easy and obviously solves most I70 issues.
Paid more for ad hoc Vail tix (plus passes in Japan) this season than if I did a pass, especially since I could have gotten a college rate price.
I think it’s worth it. Breck and vail tix are like 240 for one day. If you go for a long weekend you would make the money back. Plus some trips up to Vermont. The first year post MBA u def will be grinding but I find most banks do at least respect time off.
Wow
I paid 700 for a 3 day pass over the weekend literally two weeks ago… in an event like that an epic pass would’ve paid for itself. Your prices are all wrong I’m looking at the website right now.
Any common dead periods during Dec-Mar period you've experience which allow trips? Or it's just too variable per group?
Same dilemma but as an incoming IB analyst for an LA office looking at getting Ikon (much better Utah and CA coverage). I've had an Epic Pass through college which has made sense as I've consistently done 15-20 days of skiing a year, but how realistic is managing to spend at least 6-7 days a year skiing as a first-year analyst that's required to make getting a ski pass break even?
Deleted. *Sorry, replied under wrong message.*
Are you still in school? Can't speak on EPIC, but if you can get the student discount for the 23/24 IKON base pass (around $600) and you think you can get 3-4 days in, it is probably worth it. For reference, tickets purchased in advance for Winter Park for a 2 day weekend flex pass went for $275 this season. However, this is being ordered over 2 months in advance, and the price increased to $350 weeks later.
Don't know much about northeast skiing, but I know you get unlimited days at Stratton with IKON.
Epic site mentioned it had a manual verification process (proof of schedule or notarized letter of enrollment), so would have to check if I can verify now while still a student. Good that with Ikon I could just database verify at checkout. $589 or $612 for Epic would probably make it worth a go.
Yeah, those window/closed-in ticket prices are what worry me as I'm guessing most chances are going to be the week of, staffings are kind of slow right now, type of calls. I think I paid about $175 a day for Vail booked a few weeks in advance.
I'm pretty sure if you go only 1 weekend the passes each pay for themselves. I would expect to have 1, MAYBE 2 ski weekends in your first year or two unless you are a die-hard, have a car and drive overnight to VT type of thing. Skiing out west is going to be a whole long weekend so 0-1 a year.
The mountains are awful during holiday weekends, and most banks you'll work either the Sunday or Monday of a holiday weekend - very rare to get all 3 days off... so imo save the money and aim for 2 weekends of Fri-Sun skiing
Appreciate the thoughts.
You don’t need a car. There are buses from NYC to Killington and other places.

My friends and I do it. You have to prioritize it, and it’s going to be hard as a junior IB associate fresh out of B School, but it can definitely be done while working in NYC finance. A few trips out west, a few trips to Vermont, maybe one to Europe - worth every penny. Pays for itself after only like 5 or 6 ski days
I'm a first year analyst out in Philly. I bought the Epic Local Pass and I made my money back by going on weekend trips in the Poconos, Hunter NY, VT, flew out to Seattle for Stevens Pass and went to Andermatt Switzerland. If you're into skiing, and want to get in at least 6-7 days of skiing in a season it's def worth it. The Local pass for 23/24 season is $676 - is def a steal when you add up the amount of days you go in a season.
I usually get an Epic ~4-day pass before the season for $4-500 (they offer 3-7 day options) - works the same as an epic pass with no blackout dates just for a set amount of days if you know you’ll probably only have 1-2 ski trips. Saves you about 50% vs doing day passes especially for weekend/holidays
Sounds like that may be the play after next season once I don't have student pricing and know how many days is realistic in my group. Especially if those days seem to happen during the blackout dates.
Got two trips in this year to Colorado. Got the ikon 3 day for 300-400 and got to A-basin and copper that weekend. Second trip was copper for 3 days during the Dew Tour stuff in February for like 400. Wasn’t a bad deal at all imo. I liked the multi-day passes for the long weekends since we’d be out there all day and get our money’s worth.
https://usskiandsnowboard.org/goldpass - group fund one of these with some friends. Pass can be shared and great cause most is tax deductible. Wont have to pick Epic or Ikon and most likely you all wouldn't be able to ski the same times. also great cause and zero blackout dates.
Sounds like a cool idea for a pass, but probably that's one down the line, like Director/MD days. Economics just don't make sense as a stub associate, especially as I don't have any existing NYC ties/network. Guessing any crew I'd go in with on a pass with would also be people I'd go to the slopes with on any trip.
Thats my bad They used to be 5K and $4300 deductible. So the pass was only $700 outta pocket for a shared pass. Just saw the massive up pricing. I will note that I am glad to see a large group of ski enthusiasts on the forum. Prior coach stuck in Chicago with horrible ski options other than flying. Dont sleep on the non pass mountains in the north east Hunter Gore and some of NH. Stowe Jay peak is best in VT but a hike from NYC. Dont forget quick weekends to Norteastern PA not the best but will fix the scratch for a quick weekend outside NYC. Grew up on the true Ice coast
