Where Do You Bank?
I currently bank with a regional bank. I'm considering switching to an online-only bank like Ally. All I need is a no-fee, no-minimum checking account. With Ally, I'd get that, 24/7 customer service, no ATM fees, and I could deposit checks via scanner.
I could also get $150 when I open a Chase checking account. Are there brick and mortar banks that offer all of the above services?
What do you do for personal banking?
I actually bank at a small community bank that a client of mine started a few years ago. No fees for ATM useage out of network, no monthly fees for checking, no fees for coming into the bank, etc. Each customer is known by name. It's pretty nice.
I haven't found anything about the bank that would make me want to switch to a different company.

Small bank near my hometown that still has me as a student checking account so no fees. Until they change it I'm not switching.
TD Bank, before that Commerce.
I find their green buildings are warm and welcoming. Much like the greenbacks that are virtually stored somewhere within the Matrix.
What do you guys do when you travel though? Like, I need to deposit a few checks and I need to go find a local branch to do it. It wold be much easier to find a scanner.
Most banks have apps now for that.
i have my own bank. we are looking for foturne tellers.
Chase. Everything's free besides the occasional out of network ATM fee and the technology is superior to everything else I've seen.
Just make sure you have monthly direct-deposit.
I bank with Ally. Great rates, no fees, super convenient. If you ever have to talk to a person on the phone though, they are not the sharpest knives in the drawer...
charles schwab for life, all foreign atm charges refunded :)
Credit Union, & most all banks have mobile apps for deposits etc.
I'm with @"jbone24" - Credit unions, and I also have banking, savings, and brokerage accounts with USAA. As an aside, USAA often has a deal where new brokerage accounts (it has to be your first with them) can get around 50 commission free trades after opening new accts. They also have cheap insurance and loans. Up until now we always had USAA insurance, but Allstate gave us a better deal last year and we switched. But as for the local brick and mortar situation, I will always give a credit union my money and never to a big bank again. Tried that twice and they are a complete waste of time and headaches. Don't know about Chase though, it seems that a lot of you swear by them, but I've never tried them.

Also nice to have everything in one place.
Someone told me about a new online bank called Simple. Apparently it has little or no fees. They also have some sort of budgeting tool. Sounds like it would be good for OPs purposes.
For my savings account, I use Barclays. 0.90% APY, not too shabby. I only really keep my emergency fund in there, though. Long-term savings are tied up in investment accounts: Betterment (super simple buy-and-hold ETFs), Motif Investing (mainly position investing), and TD Ameritrade (currently just doing no-load MFs, but in the future will experiment with swing/day trading for funsies).
Just make sure to bank where it is too big to fail.
But if you work for a bank then you will have to open an account with them right?
If you're in the NYC metropolitan area, go for JP Morgan Chase. ATM's everywhere, great customer service, TBTF status, pretty much checks all the boxes. Most importantly they actually treat you like your business matters to them, especially at their private client branches. Their international atm fees are reasonable, and they'll give you a competitive FX rate. The only bank that can do better on international transactions is Citi, but then again Citi has shit customer service and shit ATM/app technology.
I have tried at least 15 different banks, and by far the best one is Ally Bank. Ally doesn't have branches, and I find that once in a blue moon I need to go to a branch (deposit money order for example). You are best served having a credit union, as those usually have free checking accounts. Now, of all the "big" banks, I think Chase is the best. It is pretty easy to waive the fees. Bank of America will nickel and dime you. They are a fee generating machine. For example, for savings account, you are supposed to be able to make 6 withdrawals in a statement by law. But the policy with BoA is that they only allow 3, each subsequent withdrawal is a $5 fee!
So, open an account with Ally Bank + a FCU and you are set. Do most of your banking with Ally Bank. And tie your FCU account to the Ally Bank account, as you can push and pull ACH for free using Ally Banks interface online. Ally Bank reiumburses ATM's fees up to $600/year. Don't go over that as they will send you a 1099-INT at the end of the year if you do. I have also heard great things about USAA, but I've never tried them. I'm happy with my Ally Bank account.
Unless you are cranking out 100s of 1000s, credit union is way to go. I get 3% interest on up to 50k in checking account. Also, ATM refunds globally.
Most any bank will meet basic needs for free. It isn't until later in life when you may need special services that a global bank is your best bet.
To the 2% of you who are any kind of veteran, Chase offers the following
•No Monthly Service Fee •Free Chase Design Checks •Free Safe Deposit Box •No fee on Money Orders, Official Checks, Travelers Checks and Gift Cards •No Chase fee on 5 non-Chase ATM withdrawals per month •No Monthly Service Fee on 2 additional Chase Premier Plus Checking accounts •No Monthly Service Fee on Chase Plus SavingsSM •Free Chase Mobile® Banking •Free Online Banking with Bill Pay
In addition, if you are still active (probably 0% of you): •Interest paid on checking balances •No Chase fee on ANY non-Chase ATM withdrawals worldwide
Obviously it's a way to suck in the hundreds of billions that pay our servicemen/women a year...but the benefits extend to anybody who has served in any capacity which is pretty cool.
Also I live in a highly regulated state where Chase pulled all of their branches out (shady) and still have 0 issues because of their tech
I've got a long-term view of my banking. I use my banking institutions (2 large community banks) as a source to conduct my real estate investment properties. Banks give greater deference to long-term customers when it comes to lending terms. So I'm not going to waste my time with large banks or credit unions.
I use Bank of America online checking and it's been great so far, no hidden fees of anything.
The advantage of using BOA online is that they have ATM's everywhere.
Chase is the best. Not sure why people get boners when a bank teller remembers their name. Probably a bad sign when they can count their customers on two hands.
Currently use Chase, but will probably bank with the firm I work for this coming summer.
I may have opened an account with Simple had they not dove headlong into left wing politics in 2013. Not interested in banking with anyone who would post left-wing rantings on their facebook page.
So you'd be cool if they posted right-wing rants
Nope. Not interested in the political beliefs of the businesses I use, from Chick-fil-A to Google. I'm interested in the products; however, if I go to a company's Facebook page and the administrator is calling people like me a bigot, etc. then it's a powerful reason for me not to use their services. I already can barely stand to use Google and Apple products and I'm annoyed that I could be labeled for getting a #3 at Chick-fil-A. Just wish these organizations would shut the hell up.
