Why are people on Linkedin like this?

See photo below. HBS Online is not the actual MBA program but the Linkedin poster and everyone following is under the impression that this is an amazing accomplishment. HBS Online is simply a money grab from people with weak resumes and who cannot go to the ivy leagues themselves. Nothing more and nothing less.

This is almost as worse than the time Tyra Banks claimed she graduated from Harvard but all she did was a take a $30,000+ business course that is offered there where is no application or selection process.

"almost as worse"

I’m a fun guy. Obviously I love the game of basketball. I mean there’s more questions you have to ask me in order for me to tell you about myself. I'm not just gonna give you a whole spill... I mean, I don't even know where you're sitting at

Those prices are insane.

I will caveat that not all schools are like this. Stanford has some legit courses in Computer Science that actually help you get into their program and you can audit the courses. Not saying this is what Harvard does, but not all extension schools are garbage/ a waste.

"Courageous leadership" aka standing up to white males, which is why the photo features a woman, an Asian and a Black dude. And the Asian is most likely LGBTQ so all Gucci.

when i was 23/24 i managed to convince multiple women i wanted to date/do other stuff with that while i was a paralegal, i was also enrolled at Columbia Law School part-time* and that i was working to pay my way through school. You would be stunned at how often it worked.

*Columbia does not have a part-time program.

Oversharing about your "journey" is the worst part of both entrepreneurial and social media influencer culture.

Just list that shit on your LinkedIn and move on. You even have the option to not blast it to the world when you put it on there.

I really like PIkachu. Also, did you know that Pokemon game was based on catching insects?

not for nothing but if you've ever spent time on instagram or had one of those door-to-door knife salesmen come by, this is essentially the same phenomenon -- making things appear far better than they actually are.

How is this the poster's fault?

Harvard Business School is cheapening its brand by allowing more people into the online program. It was the school's strategic decision. Go complain to the dean and don't blame this random guy.

Took it* last year. Content is extremely legit, fun, interactive. Very high quality. They put a lot of work into it.

Would recommend CORe for any prospective MBA applicant who would like to generate an alternative transcript and/or get a global understanding of econ., stats, and accounting terminology.

Would recommend Mihir Desai's LWF (Leading With Finance) for any liberal arts/pre-law grad who never took a finance class and who would like to understand the fundamentals of finance just for the sake of it.

Those were the only ones I took. Extremely satisfied by the experience. Am grateful to this day. Learned a lot from it (I come from a medical background)

I would NOT recommend any HBS Online Course IF:

(1) You think this will help you to get into the HBS MBA Program (it won't); (2) You think this will magically enable you to apply to the typical highly-coveted highly-compensated selective positions that often get discussed here.

It remains mainly a tool, that you can leverage to your advantage, in very limited and specific cases (boosting a b-school application, becoming able to understand the business jargon when you're a law/medical student, feeling educated even if you didn't graduate from college (unfortunately, many enroll just for that)).

*I didn't include any of them on my LinkedIn Page. It really doesn't do anything for you recruitment-wise.

PS: But do mention it if you're applying to b-school though.

Saw one recently where the poster was “happy to announce” of being named an offer in a student organization

HBS needs programs like these because their flagship MBA program (which I graduated from) actually runs at a loss. World class faculty, research, learning technology, and other resources don't come cheap. HBS makes up for the loss in the MBA program with HBX (or I guess it's called "HBS Online now... it used to be called "HBX") and their executive education programs / courses (what Tyra Banks and other celebrities participate in) In fact, you could say that these programs are subsidizing the loss-making MBA program.

"ALIBABA-CK GIRL" HBS does not operate at a loss.. https://www.hbs.edu/about/financialreport/2018/Pages/default.aspx.

Also HBS Online only makes up a small % of their total revenues.

I never said HBS runs at a loss. I was referring to their MBA program, which does run at a loss. Tuition alone does not cover the cost of running the MBA program.

Does it matter what you say your life is like? Or does it matter what your life is actually like?

I think the latter.

This poor idiot thinks he's at the top of the world. It doesn't matter what delusions he thinks are true. It doesn't matter who else he's fooling. It's just not true. It's like if a random homeless guy said - "I'm the best football player in America". It's just nonsense. Children at play. You gotta have some empathy for the guy. Come on, imagine living life being that gullible? I just genuinely feel bad. But at the same time I do not, because the guy is a massive success in his imaginary world.

Look, there's always going to be people whose perception of themselves is way, way better than what it objectively is. But those are very rarely the people who actually end up being successful.

I actually disagree. Most people are smart enough to know that, using this case as an example, they are not actually enrolled in Harvard Business School - which you can extend to whatever other pointless flex people make on LinkedIn or FaceBook. I think people post stuff like this because they are deeply insecure individuals who realize their achievements don't stack up in the context of the real world. These long posts are an attempt to solicit "encouragement" and likes from others which gives them a sense of validation, and perhaps also provides a sense of pulling one over on someone who may legitimately not know the difference between HBS and HBS Online.

I get that usually when people post this stuff (on any media) its typically just aimed at one person (usually an ex, someone who doubted them, or a parent), so it seems funny to everyone else.

I just don't get where people think its a motivating think; do they really think anyone else is looking at it and get motivating. Idk, I think its everyone just copycatting the Rock (or pick a celebrity); its cool when I see the Rock making movies/working out at 3 am; not cool when the guy with no job sleeping 10 hours a day tries to motivate you.

(a) "I am in complete astonished"

(b) "I have met the right people that are supposed to be in my life"

(c) "That help me get into"

(d) "Most prestigious buisness school"

The amount of grammatical errors in this letter is insane.

Keep in mind that the only (professional) people that actually give a shit whether or not you went to a legit Ivy program vs pay-to-play online / evening / whatever program are white-collar workers in high-finance / law / consulting / business / academia.

Most other people do not care, at all. And guess what, they can land some pretty sweet jobs with CV-padding like that.
