Junior SA Resume Check

Got my resume up to date and added a couple positions. Any suggestions/changes anyone can point out that might help going into Junior recruiting this year?

Thanks

First of all, well done! That's a solid resume you have, especially for a junior. I'd definitely highlight the "founded VC" bit; it's a solid accomplishment and shouldn't be delegated to the bottom. The one thing I'd change is quantifying some parts, like this one: "pitched thesis to our Portfolio Manager resulting in increased fund position." How much did the position increase by? It'd be even more meaningful if that read some thing like, "pitched thesis to our Portfolio Manager resulting in a 20% increase in fund position."

Looks good. What about GPA?

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

Bad. Fine from a Major GPA pov, but we're on the better side of 3.0 for a semester-by-semester basis now. Will take me another semester or so before I can list it. Has limited me to having to get my resume in through almost exclusively networking, but most people haven't had an issue with it once I speak about it a little.

That sucks but glad you're on track to bring it back up. What are your thoughts on showing both major and cumulative GPA? If your overall is like 3.2+ and major is 3.5+, I think that would still look okay.

Cumm is 3.0. Suffered from a severe case of not giving a fuck for the first year and a half (along with some other non-medical issues), but my story is solid and overall the experience seems to be negated when interviewing based on work exp. and talking about the whole thing. I don't have anything against listing major gpa, but I figured only having that listed would highlight problems with my cumulative gpa. I guess both listing and keeping it omitted sort of do that, but I think right now it gives way to my experience section. Nothing is final yet, but I should be able to list "CFA Research Challenge" in my school section before august is over.

Yeah you have solid experience and I'm sure your story is good. I was just curious/trying to get more details on your situation. Good luck.

you have good experience but formatting wise this resume is pretty bad.

The first thing I think rreading it is, I have to DIG through to find the interesting stuff. You need to guide my eyes to your most impressive feats and not hide it behind other bullet points. I am not going to read everything, why would you take the chance I read a lame bullet, like:

"Utilized Bloomberg, sell-side research, company filings and direct expert and analyst interviews to develop investment thesis; created report of findings along with model and pitched to the Director of Research"

Everyone does that at an investment fund, it's expected!

I would break your bullets down into projects and use subheadings. focus on results and add more number, and use bold/italics consistently to cut down that giant block of text because no one wants to read that.

I would say this is one of your first drafts and now that you've goten all your bullet point ideas down, it's time to shape them and cut out the fluff.

OH and wide margins are good.. people read faster up to down, not left to right, so it's to you benefit to widen your margins and shape the resume so that people scan more of it. using that giant and flat block of text is a quick way to lose someone's interest.

So basically what you need to do is get the MOST impressive stuff at the front of the bullet as well, so if I were to scan up and down quickly, I am getting the best stuff about you guaranteed. It also helps the reader as well because the content across all your bullets will be consistent.

for example, do you think I'll be more turned on by "built DCF" vs "monitored". Arguable the first is sexier because it speaks to results bankers and research analysts want to hear...

I actually agree about the wide margins. Given that you have a lot of material under your first experience, it seems like you're trying to cram too much in. It was fine, margin-wise, beforehand.

TL;DR -- quantity ≠ quality

IMO it wasn't the margins but rather too much fluff content...

Tickers draw attention- whether that is good or not depends on what you got. use your judgement and guess if you want to draw attention to those bullets as opposed to others
