Is UVA that good?

So I got into UVA out-of-state and will be attending this fall to major in economics. During my sophomore year, I will apply and hopefully get into McIntire to study finance. I understand that UVA does pretty well with investment banking.

What if I don't get into McIntire? How does an Econ degree from UVA hold up? How does UVA do in other fields in finance? How does UVA compare to Ivies and other top schools in terms of placement at top firms? Does its prestige hold up?

It's a solid target for probably Mcintire only. Outside of that probably not. It's not Ivy/Wharton/Stern level in terms of NYC placement as a lot of kids go south it seems. Also, a lot of frat connections get kids feet in the door so if you're not white upper class frat star material, be careful.

I'll probably get a lot of MS for this because there is a big UVA circlejerk on here.

Here is the 2015 McIntire Employment Report: https://www.commerce.virginia.edu/sites/default/files/CCS-Documents/Des…

Hey, thanks for digging that report up for me-- lots of good info there.

I guess I shouldn't expect UVA to bat at the same level as Ivies. Also is the frat thing important? I'm Asian and I'm not from NoVa, so I really don't have any connections lol..

It probably was a bit hyperbolic. I was looking at UVA for a while and it just seemed like it was very fratty and that sort of seeped into the business school. I wouldn't worry about it that much actually. I'm just saying that it might give a leg up to certain kids. Like I said, McIntire is a solid target. I'm sure if you focus on your grades and get involved in ECs (not necessarily frats) you'll be fine. Practically every BB and a number of EBs go there. Again not entirely sure how strong UVA CAS is though. I'd definitely focus on getting into McIntire. LinkedIn is also a good source of getting an idea where McIntire/UVA grads work

I considered UVA strongly too and the general consensus on this forum is that it's a solid target (McIntire only). While I feel its reputation is slightly overstated it really offers the whole package - weather, sports, girls, academics etc. One thing to consider is that greek life is huge in UVA; while the official numbers say 30% its really 40%+ due to delayed spring rush.

Awesome, I'm excited. Do you think it would be wise/helpful for me to join a fraternity? I'm definitely looking to party, but not over the top like some of the stereotypical portrayals of the culture... Still want to focus on academics, extracirriculars, and other interests/hobbies.

My advice (I'm asian too btw) is to keep your mind open about rushing/pledging and not to write off the greek system based on the actions of a few chapters. There are about 30 different fraternities at UVA and since rush is delayed I'm sure you will have ample time to get a feel of the different houses. At the end, if you feel that the system is still not for you, nobody is going to force you to pledge.

Oh and the acceptance rate for McIntire is about 60% and the average GPA of accepted students is around 3.7ish. Pretty sure if you don't slack off and get involved - you will get in.

Did you get accepted anywhere else?

UVA is solid but I do feel like it will be difficult to compete with students in McIntire. I got waitlisted at UVA but don't think I would go there since It will be extremely competitive. Furthermore, Virginia is a long distance from NYC so if you are trying to network in-person it will be strenuous to say the least. If its your only option though I would go for it.

My 2 cents. I'm only a sophomore so don't take my advice heavily.

Nope, only UVA.

I understand your point and I know it is a fair assessment to say that the competition will be hard, given that I wont be in McIntire. I guess i'll study as hard as I can to keep a good GPA and work hard for the interviews!

Thanks

You'll have full access to OCR. Just have a good reason for why you "chose" Econ over Comm and network and you'll be fine.

MM IB -> Corporate Development -> Strategic Finance

Hard to say, most Econ kids that would have an interest in IB are only in Econ because they don't have the grades to get into McIntire, if you get what I'm saying. There's a little bit of self-selection bias there.

That being said, I know a few UVA Econ kids with good grades who seemed to do fine in recruiting.

MM IB -> Corporate Development -> Strategic Finance

That is actually outdated because Commtrack isn't used anymore. However, there are some companies that will place restrictions where only McIntire students can apply. I don't know many econ students doing banking, but there are a lot doing consulting and other stuff.

I see. I'm leaning towards IB, so my main concern is that I would be at a disadvantage against McIntire kids. How is the placement for Econ kids in consulting?

Yeah - just visited - sweet campus - well respected General managment program - BBs recruit there. Solid overall program with nice location to pursue opportunities in Northeast and Southeast. Generally considered top 15 program. Good lifestyle. Interview is key to admissions process- they want to see teamwork capabilities because of their learning team/case method focus. Apps were up 60% this year. I have my fingers crossed for myself.

for banking after the top 7-8 MBA programs. I know that most BB firms recruit heavily there. We have quite a few alums from there at our place. They're cool, smart people without any arrogance.

At least the girls were hot I guess.

Despite how bad it was, I couldn't stop laughing/chuckling at it.

Does anyone know where I can find the link to a College Case Study Interview Spoof. I want to say it was NYU/Penn, but I'm not sure. In the video the interviewer asks the students to model how a Brazilian hooker could earn more money and if it was possible to retire by 32...something along those lines.

MoneyKingdomDarden is easily the most overrated target school. NYU is a close second.

I suppose if your only goal leaving bschool is to land a BB IB gig or PE megafund, but UVA alumni ties run deep and there are a tremendous amount of UVA and Darden grads in MM and boutique (if the term exists) PE firms...and needless to say, they stick together. This is mostly from the observations I have made when searching for potential jobs, but I have seen numerous firms that the majority (nearly all) employees were from UVA/Darden, where as I have seen other firms that may have a number of alum from a certain school, but not in abundance like the UVA/Darden bunch.

At any rate, the Columbia Business School kids do some of these videos, some of which are IB specific and rather funny. One of the things that struck me with a lot of the videos was how they openly use foul language. Ii am certainly no saint and swear regularly (Thanks US Army) but I would have assumed that the school wouldn't want videos with their students dropping f-bombs posted on YouTube. Additionally, it might have not made such an impression on me if some of the students (one, an Asian girl if I recall correctly) didn't have her curse words 'bleeped' out, lol. I suppose she wasn't comfortable posting the video with her using foul language.

and cornell is a not too far behind third

why is that?

Darden's not much of a target.

In terms of recruiting, NYU is way above Darden. From what I gather not many firms from IB target Darden. I took a quick look at the Businessweek write up to check this, & it showed Barclays, Citi, & JPM hiring from there.

NYU on the otherhand has all the big dogs listed as major recruiters.

MoneyKingdomYes, Cornell is my alma mater, and I assure you its not over-rated...

I agree with you in that respect--I'd even go as far as to say that they're often underrated at the undergraduate level (some firms are FLOODED with you guys). I think, however, that the poster above was talking about the graduate school. While they do get recruited, I haven't seen the MBAs from there having nearly as much luck. I wouldn't go as far as to say that they're overrated however. Everyone knows that they're not a top target like HSW etc, but at the same they DO get onto Wall Street with relative consistency, so you can't say that they're overrated.

Yeah our grad program sucks. Plus as a grad student, I don't think I would want to live in ithica. My personal top choices are Harvard, Stanford, Berkley, UT-Austin. Those are likely the schools that I will target if I ever go back to school

That is hilarious but the guy is a douchebag. Here is another video of him talking about how he landed a summer internship.

This really was funnier than I expected.

I actually wonder what I'll do in my next destination. For the past 7 years, I've split my time between four countries on three continents, and the hot-girl factor has been consistently high. Prior to that, I lived in fugly-town, so I know the difference. I'd hate to think that there are B-schools without hot girls...

The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin', Ringo. I'm tryin' real hard to be the shepherd.

SACThe girl in black was pretty hot. These are undergrads right ??
Well, the girls might have been, but at UVA, undergrads go to McIntire. Darden is the graduate b-school.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Darden is part of the GED program offered by the University of Phoenix Business School for People Who Can't Talk Good and Want To Do Other Things Good Too??

UVA has a lot of hot girls and one of the best girl:guy ratios of any university I've been to. Not a bad place to spend 4 yrs IMO

WTF u got into nova but couldn't get into UVA in-state? Def. get outta there, the social life is similar but UVA is better on all other counts. Keeping above a 3.5 will get u into McIntire.

You must not understand english, he stated "it was the only school I applied to and somehow I got in". I assume you come from a non target with those reading comprehension skills. OP was not clear, he means he would have to apply to their business school, there is a chance he might not get in. He's wondering if UVA econ is better than Nova finance

You are seriously retarded. Clearly, I was referring to his high school apps. And you go to UCSC, which is also a non-target. Wtf is your problem?

Hey moran he never said he applied to UVA out of high school. Its not wise to make assumptions. I don't care if you go to an ivy or podunk U. You are still RETARDED.

Alright, I did apply to UVA out of highschool and i did not get in and yes I did get in to Nova. That is not the point anymore as I would have gone to UVA had I gotten in.

As yourworstenemy stated I am wondering if UVA econ will still open more doors for me than nova? Im already assuming the social life will be better...but I will have to start over, which is tough. Mcintire is probably much better recruiting wise than nova as well but not sure?

Anyone with opinions and advice would be great with any knowledge of both the schools.

If you want to do banking, I would would switch.

Join the finance clubs at Virginia, keep the GPA above 3.7 and you should be fine.

Well the admission stats are 65%. And I have talked to people that applied this year that said it is fairly competetive. I dont want to transfer and then not get in. Anybody applied and been through the process? or has knowledge of both schools offer any other advice?
