J.P. Morgan - Video Interview Invitation Corporate & Investment Banking Summer Analyst

Rank: Senior Baboon | 192

I just got offered a J.P. Morgan - Video Interview. What should I expect? This is what was stated in the email. "As mentioned previously, we would like to give you the opportunity to tell us more about yourself and invite you to record video responses to 3 questions."

Please let me know on how to proceed and on how to prepare. Do you know if they ask specific video interview questions? Do you have any general video interview tips? Something like a top 10 interview questions and answers list to the JP Morgan hirevue interview?

Thank you so much.

Investment Banking Video Interview Questions?

If you're at the video interview portion of your internship application process this most likely means you've passed the initial screen application screen (i.e., GPA) and phone interview. This video interview is likely the only thing standing between you and the Superday. And just like any other aspect of the application process, there are known details you should know and prepare for in advance.

In regards to the video interviews, the general consensus from the WSO Community suggests that the video interviews tend to have some similarities regardless of the firm you're applying to. The 2 main aspects you need to plan for are:

  1. The Video Interview Structure, and;
  2. The Questions

Hirevue and Yello Format

  • 3-4 Questions
  • 60 seconds to prepare your response
  • 60-90 seconds to deliver your response
  • A couple retakes to submit your video after reviewing your response
The whole process should take somewhere between 20-30 min depending on the amount of time you use in the above steps.

Hirevue and Yello Questions

In regards to the questions, there is no list of known questions that you can plan for but there some topics that frequently come up. You can prepare for each by knowing some of the common questions that fall in each bucket. Having your answers to the below questions should definitely increase your chances of making it to the next round.

Behavioral

These questions tend to focus on your actions in the past. They look to assess how you have behaved in the past and whether or not you have the requisite skills and personality to succeed in the firm.

** Questions that prior video interviewees have been asked are

  • Why JPM?
  • Why IB?
  • Describe a situation where you had to collaborate with a difficult colleague
  • Give an example of how you've worked on a team.

Situational

These questions tend to focus on how you would behave in the future via a hypothetical situation. These questions will assess your problem solving ability and how you might handle difficult circumstances in the future.

**Questions you might run into

  • If you know your boss is 100% wrong about something how would you handle it?
  • Where do you see yourself in five years' time?
  • You have 10 minutes before you're due to give a presentation. What do you do?

Technical

Lastly, you have the technical questions. This is purely to assess your knowledge and/or intelligence. The questions can very from defining finance terminology, to current world events/market trends, or

** Questions you might run into

  • What's WACC and how do you calculate it?
  • Name me two companies that you think should consider merging. Why?
  • How would you value an established industrials company vs. a tech start-up? Why?
  • What's the Treasury Stock Method?
  • Why would you or would you not invest in Apple?
  • What is the Dow Jones Industrial Average/FTSE as of today's opening bell?
  • Walk me through a DCF

Do you mind letting me know if you are from a target or non target as well as gpa?

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

Got it as well. Semi target with a 3.4.

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

Is this just a pre-interview screening for everyone or more than that?

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

@zootiezoot I am curious if this is just a pre-screening or a first round as well. Apparently, BAML and GS are doing a hire-vue video screening for a first round perhaps this is the same?

Aug 31,2017

fuck are u serious?? BAML too?

Aug 31,2017

Does everyone who applies to CIB at JPM get the video interview invite?

Aug 31,2017

most will yes if you get through computer screening - i.e GPA

Aug 31,2017

I have 3.8 overall from semi-target with IB and modeling experience on resume too with no invite. Maybe they'll come later?

Aug 31,2017

similar stats / schools - got invite.

Aug 31,2017

top target school, 3.6 - invite

Aug 31,2017

Nope I go to a target with a 3.8. Maybe your resume had a typo in it.

Sep 30,2017

Canadian Bank exp wont help.

Aug 31,2017
Howard Hughes:

Does everyone who applies to CIB at JPM get the video interview invite?

nope, 3.5 gpa non target and i got it. However if your a target with a high gpa 3.8> they will most likely ding your app for being too good

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

lol wtf JPM is where the top students go

Aug 31,2017

I was a target with a >3.8GPA and got the video interview. This stage basically eliminated people with really low GPAs and resumes without key IBD terms.

Aug 31,2017

This is not an interview, but will act as a first round if your resume is passed through the screening. All applicants receive this. So if your resume is not chosen, it could be just all for nothing.

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

Who screens it? analysts from your school?

Aug 31,2017

That I don't know

Aug 31,2017

if you go to a target, yes

Aug 31,2017

If its not an interview then why does it say "Video interview." I believe that this is the first round and then they choose what kids go to the superday from there like GS

Aug 31,2017

no b/c im pretty sure everyone gets this vid interview

Aug 31,2017

it's technically an interview. for JPM, most people will get this. for GS, there's a less chance.

From my experiences and what I've seen/heard - GS process is immensely more difficult

Aug 31,2017

I agree. But still, I doubt "everyone" get its because theres no way they have time to review every single video from all candidates. And if they weren't planning on reviewing it anyway, why send it out to them? just my two cents

Aug 31,2017

They'll probably review the videos of those whose resumes they pull. For all we know, they haven't pulled resumes yet.

Aug 31,2017

I was told mine was pulled so i would imagine someone in the bank flagged you to hr.

Aug 31,2017

not everyone gets it man. a computer will sift through everyone applicants' resumes and weed out the GPA 2.0s of the world

Aug 31,2017

yo don't assume my gender bro!

Aug 31,2017

I have a 2.1 gpa and got a video interview request...

Aug 31,2017

But you confirmed that you had a 3.2 or higher on the app. You lyin' son of a bitch. lol

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

My path was Phone screen, which the guy called a first round ---> Video interview

Aug 31,2017

Received this as well. I'm really confused, I've already had interviews for the tech banking group here, what is this for?

Aug 31,2017

Wait so you have to do the video interview then go through the resume screening?

Aug 31,2017

resume screening is before video => then superday

Aug 31,2017

Yeah I got this the day after I applied, I think it's part of the screening process. I'm not sure it's in place of a first round since it was only 3 questions, but I didn't talk to HR so I'm inclined to believe @BigRedMonkey

Aug 31,2017

So is this video used in conjunction with you resume for screening, or is it only watched after the resume passes the screen?

Best Response
Aug 31,2017

EVERYONE:

Submit application > resume screen i.e. GPA > most people get HireVue that acts as a first round > video gets reviewed by school team and if good, invited to superday

How do I know this? Spoke to HR at an event this week

Aug 31,2017

What if you don't have a school team and you received one?

Aug 31,2017

I believe firms have non target teams that review them

Aug 31,2017

and HCM would review as well I would guess

Aug 31,2017

Wait, so vid is the first round? no phone call? i will ask to confirm

Aug 31,2017

very interesting. I can kind of confirm. HR told me the same, but it was a long time ago so my memory isn't clear

Aug 31,2017

friend interning at JP rn told me as well

Aug 31,2017

Can confirm through a friend going through target OCR that at his school, it went hirevue (3 questions) --> superday. Seems like everyone got this hirevue though

Aug 31,2017

Hi,

Thank you for this information. I want to confirm that if we are successful in this pre-recorded interview (it does not appear to be hirevue for me), we are invited to the superday?

Aug 31,2017

I go to a target and every single one of my friends got this

Aug 31,2017

I think everyone got it, and the videos are not seen by someone in particular, it's just an algorithm that detects our behavior and answers and helps JP Morgan to select potential candidates and eliminate others

Aug 31,2017

not quite. just spoke to an alum and he said he and his team looks at the videos as well

Aug 31,2017

Think this is a joke

Aug 31,2017

The algorithms aren't to detect your speech and what you are saying. They're more focused on eye contact, posture, speech inflection, etc. from what I have read. I highly doubt that a Yello algorithm is going to have any determination whether you get a job at JPM.
The alums that I have talked to also say that they view the actual videos themselves.

Aug 31,2017

anyone know the questions yet?

Aug 31,2017

^^^ Yeah same here if anyone could tell us the questions that be great!

Aug 31,2017

Will the questions be behavioral or technical? Does HireVue allow for any practices?

Aug 31,2017

Based on the wording of the email, I feel like this might have gone to everyone

"As mentioned previously, we would like to give you the opportunity to tell us more about yourself..."

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

Anyone here complete the JPM SF phone interview and also get this video interview? I got the former but not the latter. I put NYC as my #1 choice anyway--think my resume must have been pulled by the SF office.

Aug 31,2017

...

life's easier when you're stupid

Aug 31,2017

yup, had a phone interview now this

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

I did SF interview and got the video one as well

Aug 31,2017

FYI: JPM allows you to attempt each question three times before submitting. 90 seconds to answer question

Aug 31,2017

oh wow that is huge. did you take it already - how was it?

Aug 31,2017

wasn't bad- pretty behavioral

Aug 31,2017

can someone confirm you get 3 tries before submitting? Do you get to watch your recording before choosing to submit?

Aug 31,2017

If anyone has taken it already, would you be able to say if they are qualitative/quantitative questions or are they more like behavioral interview questions. Also what did you do to prepare?

Aug 31,2017

can someone confirm if everyone got a first round interview

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

applied on july 13th.

life's easier when you're stupid

Aug 31,2017

same here. mine is in Application in Review. I applied like the 25th.

bro the GS hirevue was stupid hard lol

Aug 31,2017

Really? the behavior questions that I was asked was not too bad thankfully

Aug 31,2017

You didn't get like 4 things you needed to touch on for each question?

They asked for so much just based on one event

Aug 31,2017

I did but I prepared a lot for the interview and used the Mergers & Inquisitions Behavioral guide.

Aug 31,2017

I got that invite too. Anyone know what kind of questions they are? Are they behavioral or more technical?

Aug 31,2017

Someone hook it up with the questions

Aug 31,2017

Seems like there was some culling but most got it.

University of Chicago

Aug 31,2017

I don't think that many people got it, I know from my school semi/nontarget, but JP recruits us, only a handful of the kids that applied got it

Aug 31,2017

Really? Huh--maybe WSO is just a weird sample. Either way, seems less harsh than GS (fingers still crossed tho).

University of Chicago

Aug 31,2017

yeah GS is incredibly difficult

Sep 30,2017

If you're spending the tail end of your summer on these forums talking IB chances are you're more qualified than most applying.

Aug 31,2017

I mean I applied August 2nd in the evening and I still got it so I don't think there was any culling except maybe GPA

Aug 31,2017

anyone who applied for S&T get it?

Aug 31,2017

My buddy from same college got s&t

Aug 31,2017

Believe there's a mild screen, because I got it for 1/2 program I applied for, likely got dinged on the other one

Aug 31,2017

I just got s&t too

Aug 31,2017

I got markets too. not sure if its for S&T

Aug 31,2017

I just got one for markets but I didn't even apply for markets lol

Aug 31,2017

Just got one for Markets, anyone know what I should be expecting?

Aug 31,2017

Take it right now and let us know what the questions are

Aug 31,2017

I feel like the markets will be more detailed and focused on recent events and markets. it also did not specify that there will be only 3 question like IBD. for IBD they specified that there will be only 3 question

Aug 31,2017

Good catch, I hadn't noticed that

Aug 31,2017

if you click on the link it says Markets is 4 questions

Aug 31,2017

okay I did not click on the link. but for IBD they specified on the email

Aug 31,2017

i was told it will be behaviorals and possibly 1 question on current/macro event that you like

Aug 31,2017

Did anyone just get another email from them that appears to be exactly the same as the other one?

Aug 31,2017

yes i did, the newest one has attachments with it.

Aug 31,2017

what attachments does the second email have? didn't get one so curious.

life's easier when you're stupid

Aug 31,2017

i also didn't get a second email.. hoping to do the interview after work today

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

it was troubleshooting and FAQ guides

Aug 31,2017

Got my S&T one right now as well. Wonder what the questions will be like. Also we get 3 tries per question right?

Aug 31,2017

looks that way, my guess is its supposed to be a softball for those who are prepared.

Aug 31,2017

Has anyone done the video yet? Any technical questions or all behavioral?

Aug 31,2017

I got this email as well. Non target 3.8 GPA double majoring in finance and math. Previous banking experience.

Aug 31,2017

According to my friend who applied last year, be ready for questions like: why JPM, why IB, and something like: tell me about a time you worked in a team.
He did not have anything technical and said that after the video he received a phone interview as the next round.

Aug 31,2017

Got emails for video interviews for Markets and Global Treasury Management

Aug 31,2017

can you detail what the questions for GTM were?

Aug 31,2017

Does anybody know the three questions?

Aug 31,2017

did anyone from a non target get a video interview for CIB? if so what was your GPA if you don't mind me asking...

Aug 31,2017

I'm an incoming Sophmore at Univeristy of Illinois at Chicago, I'm not sure if it's target or non-target school, but I did get a video interview and my GPA is 3.2

Aug 31,2017

Incoming sophomore? I thought this was for rising juniors.

Aug 31,2017

You certainly might be correct. For some reason I thought I saw that it is also for sophomores as well. Does anyone else have any info on this?

At least it looks good for now, it clearly states on my resume and application what year I am, so I'll see how it goes.

Aug 31,2017

What's the title of the application you submitted?

Aug 31,2017

I am a sophomore and I got an video interview

Aug 31,2017

Same, rising sophomore at non-target.

Aug 31,2017

Woah wtf.. are the chances possible for a sophomore?

Aug 31,2017

JPM actually has a sophomore program not just for diversity students and I applied...I think CIB was the only group.

Aug 31,2017

As of last year, sophomore programs were only for URM and women, but maybe it has changed this year.

Aug 31,2017

soph, got ib and markets.

Aug 31,2017

i am pretty sure that is just diversity though..

Aug 31,2017

did you apply to a program only meant for sophomores or the typical rising junior analyst one?

Aug 31,2017

i am non diversity, applied to typical rising junior one. got both.

Aug 31,2017

I applied for the one meant for rising junior analysts and still got a video interview. Did not see anywhere that there graduation year requirements. I did not see any sophomore program

Aug 31,2017

Got a phone call and now video interview. 3.4 overall 3.6 major gpa

Aug 31,2017

Yes University of New Hampshire I am a rising sophomore and 3.7

Aug 31,2017

3.8

Array

Aug 31,2017

I did yes! I have a 3.5 but have completed two internships and am currently job shadowing an investment banker locally!

Aug 31,2017

Alright I have a question. I submitted my app and got phone interview as well as Video invitation
BUT
I realized that the "legal name" I provided in my application and on yello was misspelled. Upon realizing that I made the mistake I quickly corrected my name in "edit my profile" section on yello.

My question is will the change be reflected in the app I already submitted (and got video interview invitation for)? I haven't done the video interview yet.

Aug 31,2017

Small heads up, the videos are due by the 10th....at least for S&T

Aug 31,2017

I'm in IBD and its due the same day

Aug 31,2017

do you guys know if they hand out hirevues/interviews on a rolling basis? so if you turn in your app earlier, it's better?

Aug 31,2017

Are these apps all for the Americas Program? I was checking availability and did not see a single America opening. Or is this an accelerated round?

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

Does anyone know if we are given limited time to prepare our responses once we login into the interview room? I know that we have 1.5 minutes for recording our responses.

Aug 31,2017

Following this thread, have my hirevue due on Thursday. What do you guys use to prep?

Aug 31,2017

I am pretty sure for IB the hireVue is mostly will be behavioral like why JPM, why IB something along these line. so prepare your story ready

Aug 31,2017

i had 1 one of these for JPM CIB 7 questions situational and behavioral, no technicals. a few i remembered were why are you seeking this role, what skills do you have from prior experience do you think you can bring, what pay you looking for, when can you start, stuff like that

Aug 31,2017

Can we get a confirmation on what the questions are?

Aug 31,2017

questions don't have a set playbook, the set you'll get are boilerplate behaviorals that are probably randomized from a larger list of questions (i.e. tell me about a time when...., why JPM, why S&T/IB)

Aug 31,2017

I think they are randomized to prevent collusion.

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

Love where your head is at

Aug 31,2017

It's not a crime, but it will potentially hurt one's chances, and I think that is why no one is offering generously to share questions. Would be super helpful to have a compendium of all the questions but I don't think anyone is willing to botch his or her own chances for it.

Aug 31,2017

I was referring to the Republican stance on collusion lol, but I totally agree with you. High risk, low reward

Aug 31,2017

Anyone have an invite come out for the CRE group? I got one for IBD but nothing about CRE...

University of Chicago

Aug 31,2017

Hey guys do you know (approx) how many applicants there are for the summer internship and how many are actually accepted?

Aug 31,2017

They probably get around 5-10 thousand applications. I'm not sure how many are accepted. I make this estimate because I work for a small bank in Santa Monica and we get roughly 1,500 applicants.

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

Goldman had 250,000 applicants last summer lol so I wouldn't be surprised if JPMC got over 100k either. Source: https:// www.cnbc. com/ 2016/06/05/goldman- sachs-attracts-250000-student-job-applications. html (fix the spaces lol).

Aug 31,2017

Any one here for CIB's Winning Women? I thought Winning Women-CIB give phone interview...

Aug 31,2017

I can confirm that there are 3 behavioral questions. You get 60 seconds to prepare and you get 3 chances to submit the video. You also get to watch the video you recorded to see if you like it or not before attempting for your 2nd or 3rd time if you choose to do so.

Aug 31,2017

Thanks man. That should calm the hysteria on this thread.

Aug 31,2017

thanks for the inisght.is there a time limit as to how long you take to complete the interview? (eg is there a time limit as to how many times you can watch your attempts)

Aug 31,2017

At the beginning, they say the whole process should take roughly 20-30 minutes.

Aug 31,2017

I do not believe that there is a time limit for how many times you can watch them. I never watched them more than once.

Aug 31,2017

is there a time limit between ur first and second attempt?

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

Can confirm this also. Three questions with three tries each. Between each try you get 60s to prep yourself.

Aug 31,2017

How long should we wait until we hear whether we moved onto the next round or not?

Aug 31,2017

seeing that nearly everyone got a video interview seems like itll be long time

"The Truth is like poetry -- and most people fucking hate poetry"

Aug 31,2017

would assume depends on how many ppl from your school applied

Aug 31,2017

So is it confirmed that the markets video interview was only behavioral? Took it yesterday and got project based, team based and why this program questions. Can someone please confirm?

Aug 31,2017

How much time did you have between attempts?

Aug 31,2017

Aug 31,2017

Markets was not behavioral at alll!!!!!!!!!

Aug 31,2017

markets was hard... mine were all the financial market stuffs...

Aug 31,2017

Same! Mine was all about markets.

Aug 31,2017

yeah market questions for me too
