Reaching out to MD's from your school
I feel like reaching out to MD's is very different to reaching out to anyone else.
What can be my 'asks' when I reach out? I feel like I shouldn't ask to have a call because the chances of one actually going ahead are very slim.
Can I include my CV in my initial email just introducing myself? With the hope that they pass it on to HR which hopefully means someone actually looks at my CV and I don't get dinged at the first stage.
What have others asked for when reaching out to MD's?
In my experience MDs are generally very friendly and happy to hop on a phone call if you ask. You won’t always get a response but when you do it’ll likely be positive and they’ll be happy to offer advice, hear your story, maybe offer to forward your resume to HR if the conversation goes well.

I disagree. Would always attach resume along with short and sweet intro email
Thanks for your advice. Yes I have also found MD's to be some of the friendliest. I sometimes feel I am 'wasting' their time compared to speaking with an or associates
Just say that you would be interested in talking to learn more about their experiences. I would say yes to including resume / cv
Recently emailed a MD at a solid MM. Received no response lol but the recruiting head emailed me the next day saying that MD had passed my resume to them. Guessing that will hopefully get me a 1st round. I usually word it similar to analyst networking email and always attach my resume. I honestly have probably had a higher response rate with senior banker alumni than junior banker alumni. Also had a call with a head of a division at an upper tier MM, and he referred me internally to HR. Got a 1st round with the bank and got to the SD. Unfortunately didn't get the offer but prolly wouldn't have even gotten into the process in the first place w/o the referral as a non target. Just ask to talk about their experiences
Thank you this is solid advice. And great to hear it ended up in a HR referral for you
Might as well reach out, def attach ur resume, some MDs will forward ur resume without even getting on the phone
Thanks!
I always attach resume, gives you extra credibility and if your resume is good they may view you as more professional.
MDs in my experience have always been super nice, but you gotta have direct questions to ask. The ones I’ve talked to don’t want you fumbling through questions or asking what their favorite deal was. Keep it genuine and have a real interest (or fake it with good enough questions) and you’ll be set.
I feel like it's pretty bold to reach out to an MD, rather than the analyst, associate, vp. I'd really start there if I were you; an MD's time is extremely valuable. Not saying the occasional MD may not hop on the phone, but I wouldn't recommend starting with them
You from a nontarget? If you were you wouldn't be saying this
