What’s the deal with Selby Jennings?

From what it seems, they have a pipeline of lateral banking openings but they ghost on people. They blast my phone a million times only to read off a script. I’m so sick tired of following up to only have them forget who they even spoke to. Has anyone been placed at this shop that you know of? Thanks in advance guys!

Glad it worked out. Just curious to know what region. I had a problem for their east coast HQ. Either way they are all a pest.

He was focused on west coast recruiting, but he was great for helping facilitate intros to NYC firms as I was looking to move from SF to NYC.

Believe he was in his first year. He was hungry. Texted me opportunities and updates on the process with each firm daily.

Most of the other people I've spoken to there were complete clowns.

That’s exactly what I thought. I mean talk about incompetent. They aren't loyal to anyone because they need to fill positions but for God sakes they sure are useless and a waste of time.

Pinpoint literally is the nuclear bomb of preying on desperation by blasting jobs that don’t exist.

Do NOT bother using recruiters. Especially for IB. My firm and most banks (even trashy shops) will only take a recruiter candidate as a last resort. If you're the best candidate and deserve the job, but #2 isn't far behind, they'll go with #2 (because they dont want to pay the free for using the recruiter).

Analyst 2 in IB - Gen:
Selby Jenning and Phaidon International are trash. Absolute trash. Ghosted me and a bunch of my buddies for banking postings. We eventually landed by directly networking with the Analyst/Associates at the bank.
Actually I have some insight on that.

If they float your resume to banks and don't get positive responses, they do just ghost you. Not sure why they think that is a good business model.

The word had to get out. Would be nice for a top MD to expose them and I’m not quite sure why banks even retain these guys. They literally add no value to a conversation at all..

They are garbage. From I've been told/ascertained, they post BS jobs and use it collect comp info. No idea what they do it. Either incredibly unorganized or just not genuine with regards to real opportunities or intentions. Would advise to just ignore them altogether as God knows what they will do with your resume.

I get a call and email from Bryan Gearghty at Selby Jennings once a month. I block his calls. One time he made an off-color racist remark about my name. Total jerk. I tell everyone I speak to in the HH industry about it. Also they post fake jobs they aren't really hiring for to loop you in and do the good old bait n switch. I would avoid them at all costs. They also don't store your data properly and hand it out freely from what I hear.

Someone from Selby Jennings once told me that MF/UMM PE firms actually prefer people from boutique shops vs BB, and that I shouldn't try to work at a BB, bc it looks better that you had more responsibility at a smaller firm and are "scrappier". Total BS it was obvious she had no idea what she was talking about. She then tried to convince me that some lesser roles were better bc the COL for a certain city was less so "it's basically the same".

Mind you, the reason this convo was started was bc they emailed me saying they worked with big name firms like XYZ. When I asked about XYZ firms she said "no we work with firms LIKE those" then proceeded to tell me about opportunities at small firms I've never heard of.

They have no idea what they're talking about, limited access to any real firms, and aren't reliable with regards to follow up.

Avoid if possible.

Update: they literally sent an email this morning asking to fill out a survey about comp, location etc. and said that if you complete the survey you'll be entered in a raffle to win free airpods lmfao

With all the above being said, are they any good headhunters to use? Feel like firms are generally less receptive to candidates coming from headhunters rather than referral.
