I like the trenchcoats from London Fog

Billy Reid has awesome coats. Unfortunately they are a bit pricey, but will last you a long time.

dipset1011googled caruso didn't find anything. Anyone else?

Caruso is a new line carried Bergdorfs/Neimans - price point is 1600 Also check out Canali top coats - price point 1500 but sales up to 30% put you at around 1040 with taxes

+1 on the Banana Republic overcoat. I Just scooped one up today, make sure to get one size larger though they are a bit tight. I'm sure the BR's near you have a discount right now, i got mine for $95 marked down from $275!!!

They are more modern looking/fitting and slightly above the knee.

Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis - when I was dead broke man I couldn't picture this

monkayWould you normally wear one of these to an entry level interview? I feel like more established employees would wear these but I guess given the current weather they make sense

Actually, you must be thinking of top hat. That's what more established employees would wear.

More is good, all is better

dude, no matter how dumb you may look in a ski parka, even, you'll look better than if you show up with a runny nose, shivering. don't worry about style, worry about substance.

and listen - no interviewer is going to judge a college kid for not owning a topcoat. if they do - well, that interviewer's a prick and you don't want to work with people like that anyways. wear what you have with confidence and let your interview skills do the job for you.

Will Smith got a job in just a wife-beater and slacks so I wouldnt worry too much about your topcoat debate...

If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses - Henry Ford

So is "topcoat" referring to an "overcoat", as in one that extends past the knees, or are we talking about a "topcoat" in the traditional sense that stops at or before the knees?

Not being an ass, just curious as to what everyone is wearing.

Yeah I usually don't buy formal attire from express but I'm able to get the coat for a little under $200. I'm looking for a slimmer fit topcoat for ~$200 max, what other places do you recommend I look?

If you're NYC-based, hit up the Nordstrom's Rack in Union Square. Nordstrom's usual selection, limited a bit of course, but also marked down noticeably.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

the Express topcoat looks like it has no vents. which means, a no-go.

I would say decent, marked-down slim topcoats are overwhelmingly in the 150-300 range

Thanks! This will be my first topcoat so I wanna make sure I get something appropriate yet affordable. I appreciate all the info A Posse Ad Esse

I generally buy winter gear from LL Bean. It lasts forever.

A lot of people on WS wear peacoats. The look nice, but have gained popularity with hipsters lately., if you care about that. The also don't do much in the rain. Still, this one is solid:

My feeling is that your winter coat need not be particularly good looking. You take it off once you get to work anyways. I have used this coat in a shorter length, and it is fantastic:

Custom cashmere topcoat: $1,000 - $10,000+ * I wear my grandfather's sometimes, and it's 60 years old: these things will last forever if you take care of them. Are a luxury, buy when you hit 'baller' status.

Sacks 5th Ave / Off-5th topcoats: $300 - $1,500 * I'll be buying one soon, they're pretty good and look almost like the high end stuff. Avoid anything 'fashionable' like Burberry or Armani, unless you're trying to get demoted or picked up at a gay bar.

Century 21 downtown: $90 - $400 * Decent coats that will last for a season or two, but probably the what you're dealing with now.

DO spend a few bucks extra on something nice because good ones are very warm and senior staff dig them (for whatever the reason). Just like with clothing, people can tell the difference between the real thing and a knockoff (especially older people) and just as with office attire, they will judge you based on your appearance. Fortunately, the women in my office like to play dress up so I don't need a fashion consultant or any of that nonsense, but invest in a good coat, take care of it, and you'll never have to bother with shopping for another.

nice. will look into it!

Not sure what you are willing to spend, but if you are looking for a good-quality coat to hold on to for a long-time, I'd recommend Krane Design. Their products are made in Canada.

For some further reviews, check here.

You could probably find one on sale if you do some searching.

[quote=Edmundo Braverman]All joking aside, I've been rocking a Driza-Bone for years now. Best winter coat I've ever owned. The oil-skin is completely water resistant, the coat is warm all by itself, but you can also buy a liner for it. You can get one for $249 online, but they used to be a lot cheaper (before they got popular).

woah never knew that existed. reminds me of the matrix haha. can probably hide a couple uzi's underneathe that so nobody piss me the fuck off

I've been feeling topcoats and chesterfields a lot lately.

Uniqlo had some nice wool chesterfields last season. I regret not getting one (it was on sale for $60).

equity_playerIt's starting to get cold and I'm in the market for a new one.

Either black or grey. I like coats that end at the waist (or very slightly below the waist). It could be a pea coat or zip up. Wool preferable but I just need to keep warm because I walk a lot in the city.

Budget: Trying to keep it at 300 but wouldn't mind going up to 400 if it's something really reallllllly jawesome.

Thanks!

Go to Century 21 downtown before 9AM and ask the nice old guy with gray hair and wide rimmed glasses for help: he worked at GS years ago and now works semi-retired in retail (he drove his wife nuts and she made him get a part time job...) He will help you find a coat for under $200 that will make you look good, and you will be indistiguishable from rich kids unless someone starts checking labels (CK/Polo v custom handmade).

Oh you need nice winter coat.I have also visited for that to one online shoppe it is having really nice collection of winter collection for men as well as women. You can nice winter leather coats from there. For more information visit at: http://www.leathericon.com/

it definitely depends on where you are interning. A more formal firm would definitely want you to wear a suit, but an informal firm you can wear whatever everyone else is wearing. I don't think it would be stupid to call HR and ask what everyone wears

you might also want to inquire about the firm's policy on tophats while you're at it.

My drinkin' problem left today, she packed up all her bags and walked away.

Normally I would do that ST, but on doing a quick search I didn't find anything similar to what OP was looking for... any chance you have a picture of said overcoat OP?

newfirstyearWith one of those brightly colored collars? I saw a guy wearing a coat with the collar popped, and the underside of the collar was bright red....it looked awesome.
For starters, go to a place like MySuitNY or Indochino and get one made for ~$500, it'll fit you perfectly and you'll have complete control over its customization. After my first SA gig as a sophomore and I had cash in my pocket for once, I wanted to buy a decent suit (and that collar felt was a must). I had so much trouble finding something that fit off the rack and also had the features I wanted, so I ended up buying my first MTM suit. Haven't gone back to OTR since.

I actually hate overcoats since they leave your chest exposed, which sucks when you are going no tie, unless you wear a scarf. Much prefer car coats that zip up, or lined trenchcoats.

above your knees but halfway down your thigh....or BTs pic! lol

I bought the Charles Tyrwhitt charcoal covert coat on sale for $299 down from $600 and I loooove it. They're still on sale for that price.

I second a Charles Tyrwhitt Charcoal covert coat but I would also recommend that you may also go for a custom tailored coat. My personal favorite is Crown Tailor based in Bangkok but they also travel to US around march. Here is the link to their website, you can contact and ask when would they be there. I for one can vouch for these guys, worth every penny. http://www.crowntailor.com Cheers!

Thanks guys. Are there particular styles which are acceptable to wear or not wear?

@Stryfe - I like the $300 recommendation. Would you also know other places like this that may have sales on coats?

Here to learn and hopefully pass on some knowledge as well. SB if I helped.

I have the J. Crew University Coat in grey and black and really like it.

http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/outerwear/wool/PRDOVR~96037/96037.jsp

Right now they're on sale for $150 after 25% off and free shipping. Great coat and definitely warm enough for NYC/east coast. I've worn it over my suit a couple times and it fits/looks great. For size reference, I wear a 40R suit (40S in some brands) and have the "Regular - Small" size J Crew University Coat.

Bad idea. You are going to want a long trench coat with a liner that zips out so you can use it both in the winter and summer. Don't get anything like a pea coat as the fibers will often stick to shirts. You are also going to want something that covers you legs while you are sitting on the subway/metronorth/path or even in a cab.

Overcoats you might eventually need as a grown-up who lives in New York:

-- Navy blue overcoat -- Charcoal overcoat -- Beige raincoat -- Black or dark gray Chesterfield coat

I have all 3. I recommend getting a heavier wool overcoat/chesterfield if you're in NYC.

A mac raincoat would also be good for the spring as well.

Yes, I prefer Hugo Boss, Lagerfeld or Joop, in black or dark blue.

I'm talking about liquid. Rich enough to have your own jet. Rich enough not to waste time. Fifty, a hundred million dollars, buddy. A player. Or nothing. See my Blog & AMA

got one from tommy hilfiger, dark blue (would recommend this as well or black, but some people would probably hate that just like a black suit, dark blue/navy/whatever you want to call it will be safe), friend has one that looks exactly the same but from some other brand I don't recall now, most of them look exactly the same these days, just shop around and try them on to see how they fit and feel, don't just pick the name

oh, I would also suggest staying away from ankle length ones

I have a Kenneth Cole one and a Jos Bank one. Jos Bank is much heavier for when the weather in Chi starts touching single digits. Probably going to get a Brooks one for myself for Christmas this year just to class things up a bit.

Also, I definitely wouldn't go ankle length, but I go 3/4's down to around the knees. I need it when that wind whips off Lake Michigan in January

I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Burberry still makes great top coats

"The way to make money is to buy when blood is running in the streets." -John D. Rockefeller

Go for either navy blue or charcoal -- the only black coat you'll ever need will be a Chesterfield (which can also be charcoal). The topcoat/overcoat/whatever is a fairly necessary piece of clothing for an adult professional (meaning you won't regret buying a quality topcoat, so just fucking do it).

@carlfox -- Burberry is still great for raincoats, but I wouldn't recommend them for a basic topcoat.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a black top coat. Black is the most widely available color and the most common one I have seen. This isn't a suit we are talking baout.

Don't have one myself, but have always admired Billy Reid and have read that they have awesome coats.

EDIT: And at a reasonable price when compared with the likes of Burberry and other designer brands.

Yes, every guy should have one.

I have three in charcoal, black, and navy. It's such an essential piece that you can really wear it with anything.

London Fog Aiden coat, I'm about to purchase it, heard great things and has good color options. Going with the black though. On sale $99

Used some crappy peacoat last year, donated it to goodwill after the winter cause it was a POS. Don't remember the brand.

If you have the money for them, All Saints and Billy Reid have a few nice winter/fall coats.

invest in some thick wool cardigans, nice change of pace from coats

You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake, son.

You can go for London Fog, Lexington Company or Ralph Lauren top coat and jackets. They have really nice collection of jackets with removable liner that can be used as a rainjacket in fall / spring and a winter jacket also.

This looks like almost a cross between a peacoat and a donkey jacket. Both are considered casual jackets and should not be worn with a suit.

Having said that, if you are loking for a value purchase that you can also wear on campus it makes sense and you will get away with it imo.

However if you are looking for a dedicated work jacket it would be a no. Get something that finishes just above the knee...much sharper more professional look.

Thank you both for the comments! @Maherj1 .. Yes as you mentioned.. I am l wanna be able to wear it on campus as well.. So I guess for now I should purchase this one,?? So I am guessing as both of you mentioned,, that I should buy something that reaches down to my knee for more professional look... right?!
