Goldman Sachs Investment Management Interview

I have an upcoming interview with Goldman IMD. Is this mostly fit or will there be technical questions too? How in depth do I need to know the market atmosphere?

^HCM = human capital management? Shouldn't be technical at all. IMD is more based on fit yet there will be technical questions. Keep in mind unless you're interviewing for a specific group the questions will be general portfolio theory or valuation questions. At the very least be somewhat well-versed in the markets and have a few stock pitches ready to go.

Is it possible for me to switch to IB or IMD or any other revenue division if I'm able to get into HCM?

What kind of questions do you predict for HCM?

I'm truly passionate about working for GS, and kind of went along with HCM, not knowing much about it. ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

If your goal is IBD then dont apply for HCM. You'll be better served interning at another BB, EB or middle market IB than HCM.

@"goodL1fe" could you please help me understand more about the HCM division?

http://byuobhr.blogspot.com/2013/12/2014-human-capital-management-summe… --> Does this website give a good overview? I'm trying to understand if HCM deals with any finance/operation related activities, or is it all recruiting/talen-acquisition based. I'm a sophomore trying to break into the finance industry (not sure of the division), so as of now, GS HCM sounds really good. Do you agree?

ANY HELP would be HIGHLY appreciated!! Thank you so much!

HCM = Human Resources. As a sophomore internship isn't not bad especially with the GS name. However, I recommend you pursue other finance opportunities.

I had a first round IMD interview with GS. I'm a junior in college, so that matters too. The questions were as follows:

What was your favorite course so far? Tell me about your last internship? Greatest Strenght Greatest Weakness Run me through a DCF (since I had knowledge of one on my resume) Pitch me a stock (again, since related to past internship). Why Investment Management?

Any questions you want to ask?

great opp as a sophomore, but do not ever underestimate Goldman: what started out as a PWM interview turned into a mind-numbing chain of interviews into other (and what people on this board would deem far superior) areas of the firm for me last year. Goldman is a huge fan of sticking kids into what they and you deem as the best fit, and if anything a generalist interview for a division is only the first step.

really don't worry about numbers or who you're up against: it's your 30 minutes and you're selling yourself, not anybody else. if the interest and demonstrated knowledge of technicals (PWM runs on the lighter side) then you will be fine as a sophomore

Were you guys all juniors when you did this? I literally have no financial experience at all (I'll show my resume if I must), so I have no idea how I'm going to sell myself. In addition, I've never have a real interview before...

WSJ, FT, NYT dealbook, any financial news source that's up to date. Read the Vault Guide to Investment Banking if you're interest in general finance on a macro sort of level or Vault Guide to Finance Interviews if you just want generalized info. Don't know of any solid IMD-specific sources, it's very much so fit rather than technical.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

i went to GS IMD superday when I was a sophomore. they bring in a lot of sophomores for superday, but sophomore still have a harder chance to get a summer offer than juniors. just be yourself, the interview was nothing technical. they just want to get to know you better as a person - just be yourself

Hi!

I have a first round interview for GSAM Third Party Distribution next wednesday. It's in London for the position as a New Analyst. I was surprised when they told me that I already will have 4 interviews in my first round - is that normal? Does anyone know if the interviews are harder/more technical for Analysts than for interns?

Thank you!

If it's a sophomore program, they will likely not expect as much in terms of technicals. That means if you do know them, make sure you show it. Expect a standard ~2 hour ~3-6 interview superday with anywhere from 1 to 3 interviewers during each session. And contact HR; they will answer questions about the event as well.
