same question haha! I'm interviewing in HCM, but not sure how technical they will get PM me if you wanna chat!
^HCM = human capital management? Shouldn't be technical at all. IMD is more based on fit yet there will be technical questions. Keep in mind unless you're interviewing for a specific group the questions will be general portfolio theory or valuation questions. At the very least be somewhat well-versed in the markets and have a few stock pitches ready to go.
Is it possible for me to switch to IB or IMD or any other revenue division if I'm able to get into HCM?
What kind of questions do you predict for HCM?
I'm truly passionate about working for GS, and kind of went along with HCM, not knowing much about it. ANY help would be greatly appreciated!
If your goal is IBD then dont apply for HCM. You'll be better served interning at another BB, EB or middle market IB than HCM.
@"goodL1fe" could you please help me understand more about the HCM division?
http://byuobhr.blogspot.com/2013/12/2014-human-capital-management-summe… --> Does this website give a good overview? I'm trying to understand if HCM deals with any finance/operation related activities, or is it all recruiting/talen-acquisition based. I'm a sophomore trying to break into the finance industry (not sure of the division), so as of now, GS HCM sounds really good. Do you agree?
ANY HELP would be HIGHLY appreciated!! Thank you so much!
HCM = Human Resources. As a sophomore internship isn't not bad especially with the GS name. However, I recommend you pursue other finance opportunities.
HCM is not human resources? I don't see how you can leverage your experience at HCM to IBD?
I had a first round IMD interview with GS. I'm a junior in college, so that matters too. The questions were as follows:
What was your favorite course so far? Tell me about your last internship? Greatest Strenght Greatest Weakness Run me through a DCF (since I had knowledge of one on my resume) Pitch me a stock (again, since related to past internship). Why Investment Management?
Any questions you want to ask?
Come on guys/gals...the quality of posters have really gone down on WSO. Do some fucking research before you post... HCM is HR, go to the GS website and read up on it.
"Human Capital Management (HCM) is responsible for attracting, developing and managing the firm’s biggest asset: our people."

Goldman Sachs Investment Management Interview? (Originally Posted: 01/26/2011)
hey, so I recently got accepted for my first interview for any bank period, and of course, I get stuck with Goldman Sachs first. I'm curious, how many people are chosen for an interview out of the many that apply at a target school? Like percent-wise. Also, what amount of people that interview will eventually be able to get the internship? I see 30 time slots available, so I don't know how this works. Finally, how hard is it to get an internship in this area as a sophomore who doesn't have much work experience? It is the PWM area. Thanks so much for any help
Goldman PWM? should be pretty easy to get
great opp as a sophomore, but do not ever underestimate Goldman: what started out as a PWM interview turned into a mind-numbing chain of interviews into other (and what people on this board would deem far superior) areas of the firm for me last year. Goldman is a huge fan of sticking kids into what they and you deem as the best fit, and if anything a generalist interview for a division is only the first step.
really don't worry about numbers or who you're up against: it's your 30 minutes and you're selling yourself, not anybody else. if the interest and demonstrated knowledge of technicals (PWM runs on the lighter side) then you will be fine as a sophomore
.
Were you guys all juniors when you did this? I literally have no financial experience at all (I'll show my resume if I must), so I have no idea how I'm going to sell myself. In addition, I've never have a real interview before...
I was a junior. Relax. Read up on everything you can in the meantime. They will skew towards asset allocation and your opinion of the market for their basic technicals.
Yeah, sorry I am trying but my only knowledge of finance is reading cnn money on occasion...is there anywhere in particular I can go to read up on this stuff?
WSJ, FT, NYT dealbook, any financial news source that's up to date. Read the Vault Guide to Investment Banking if you're interest in general finance on a macro sort of level or Vault Guide to Finance Interviews if you just want generalized info. Don't know of any solid IMD-specific sources, it's very much so fit rather than technical.
Just had first round, both interviews were fit-based - very focused on why IMD specifically, and if there was any asset class I was particularly interested in. I would imagine how following certain asset classes would help significantly here.
Can anyone give me some examples of asset classes? I have no idea what that is...
Equity, fixed income, real estate, commodities, alternatives, etc
I
You told him that you wanted to do daytrading? Seriously?
hahah yeah...i mean honestly man you said you wanted to be a daytrader at an IM interview? i can see why someone from GSAM would tell you not to do daytrading...i assume it would be like that at basically any AM/PWM interview...
i went to GS IMD superday when I was a sophomore. they bring in a lot of sophomores for superday, but sophomore still have a harder chance to get a summer offer than juniors. just be yourself, the interview was nothing technical. they just want to get to know you better as a person - just be yourself

Hi!
I have a first round interview for GSAM Third Party Distribution next wednesday. It's in London for the position as a New Analyst. I was surprised when they told me that I already will have 4 interviews in my first round - is that normal? Does anyone know if the interviews are harder/more technical for Analysts than for interns?
Thank you!

I am currently a sophomore at a target school. I was just wondering what questions I will likely be asked in the superday.
Also, how good is this internship if i get it as a sophomore? can this lead into banking my junior year?
My friend had it...mostly fit and market questions. It is pretty good for a soph. I'm sure you can try to spin it for ib, my friend did but chose to go back to GS imd.
goldman Asset Management you mean? or is this totally different?
why would you want to leave IM for IBD?! lol
No this is more like PWM i think. You think they will ask me any technical questions? and if so what kind of questions?
Also interested!
How is this if you want GS IBD next year? Do a lot of laterals happen between divisions?
You should read through the website before making assumptions about what's housed in this group.
GSIM -> PWM, etc + GSAM GSAM -> traditional Asset Management, alternative asset management. Some sick groups are here, some that are much rarer opportunities than BB IBD.
i don't think they'll place sophomores into those internal HFs though
Probably not but it's possible to get placed in the traditional AM. It all depends on how much you impress them with what you know.
GS Investment Management Internship Interview Preparation (Originally Posted: 04/14/2012)
Hello Everyone,
I applied for an internship at GS for their IMD and I want to prepare for the interview as I wait for confirmation. Not being pretentious or anything, but I figure its a win-win: if i get the interview, I'll be prepared, if not, I'll learn some stuff anyways.
I know that IMD is broken down to AM and PWM, and I was wondering how to prepare for each. For now, I'm reading the Vault Guide for PWM because I am a sophomore and I figure that its more likely that they're most likely going to put a sophomore (from a non target school) into PWM than AM. What else can I do to prep? My technical knowledge is very limited, so how can I make up for that?
Thanks in advance for the input.
had a GS PWM interview last month.. it was almost entirely fit based (i.e. talking about your resume, your strengths, why GS, etc.) didnt have any technical questions- just know the company's stock price and where the S&P is at
I have a GS PWM interview coming up too. Will they ask specific questions: stock pitch, recent M&A's, etc? I know they will ask these for ib interviews, but I don't know what PWM interviews will be like.
How did this go! I have one coming up looking for help

I have a GS IMD superday coming up for sophomores. Does anyone have any experience with this? Or know what the interviews will be like?
If it's a sophomore program, they will likely not expect as much in terms of technicals. That means if you do know them, make sure you show it. Expect a standard ~2 hour ~3-6 interview superday with anywhere from 1 to 3 interviewers during each session. And contact HR; they will answer questions about the event as well.
good luck
It's on Thursday. What type of technicals would they even ask for this position? Just curious.
