Canadian Lateral to NYC
Hi,
This form has been a great resource over the years and I am thankful for everyone who constantly posts to help other people. I am an associate at a Canadian big 5 bank looking to lateral to a US bank (either EB, MM or BB). I have one year of experience and decent deal flow.
I was hoping people could provide me with some information as to how to make the transition. Specifically, if anyone has gone from a Canadian bank to NYC I would love to hear how you did it and any general advice you may have.
Some questions I have:
*Are the Canadian Big 5 banks looked down upon in NYC at the EB, MM and BB? *How effective is applying for jobs online for an experienced associate position? *Should I be aggressively networking? *What is the interview process like? How structured is it? *Any other relevant information that may be helpful.
Thanks for your time everyone!

Moving from a Canadian Bank to New York (Originally Posted: 01/19/2017)
Hi all, I am set to start working at a Canadian bank in Toronto this summer and am hoping to eventually make the jump to New York. I was curious if anyone has had experience with this or if anyone had any opinions on how to best position myself come my start date in order to successfully complete the transition to New York.
Thanks!

Canadian Analyst coming to NYC FT (Originally Posted: 03/13/2012)
Hey so I got an offer full-time US BB IBD, and I'm wondering what is the process for the Visa sponsorship.
Generally the BB will take care of the visa application for you. If you're still a student and only heading down to the US for the summer, it should be J1. If you're going there for FT, it would be an H1B (if you're lucky with the lottery process) or a TN visa
I would see if your firm has a person dedicated to handling the visa stuff who you can speak to, and then give them a call. That said, if the offer is for FT, then you should get H1B or TN. Read up on the differences between the two. I don't know anything about J1.
Can I ask what your story is (i.e. what uni you went to, where u worked, ect)? I'm really interested in breaking into IBD from Canada
