Does Anyone Else Hate Phone Interviews?

Seriously why do the suck so much? Either for networking or 1st rounds, I highly dislike having to talk on the phone. Not being able to see the other person makes the conversation so much more awkward, especially when you talk over another. I mean it's expected but it's still such a pain in the ass.

Being able to Skype or see them in person is just so much easier for me. I don't know why but I am far more comfortable and at ease in those situations than over the phone.

Am I crazy?

Phone interviews are def a whole different animal than in person interviews. However, the interviewer is aware of all of the potentially awkward issues that can come from a phone interview (talking over each other) and will judge accordingly. Being good on the phone can be seen as somewhat of a different skill set and an important one at that. If you're going to be in a FO role, you are likely going to be on the phone with clients a lot and your ability to make things go smoothly is important.

I think most everyone thinks phone interviews go worse than they really do though. During my last phone interview, my phone kept losing reception (I had tested it just an hour earlier) and the interviewer was constantly saying "hello? hello?" I thought I was toast but got invited for a super day. It all depends on how you handle things.

"I know you think you understand what you thought I said but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."

I prefer in-person interviews, but know people who LOVE phone interviews because you can have a ton of information in front of you (eg technical guides!) without them knowing its there, which makes it easier to answer some questions.

I don't mind them, but I HATE Skype interviews. So what if my lower half is naked ! Gahd !

Don't waste your life only thinking about money and prestige

My advice for phone interviews - call a few of your buddies/family members before you do the interview. It's weird, but simply having a normal conversation on the phone with a few people will make you a lot more comfortable talking to a complete stranger.

I agree that phone interviews suck, but they are really just another screening tool. The decision to hire won't be made during a 30 min phone call - you just need to do enough to get to the next round.

"For I am a sinner in the hands of an angry God. Bloody Mary full of vodka, blessed are you among cocktails. Pray for me now and at the hour of my death, which I hope is soon. Amen."
