I had a scary experience in NYC last night

Normally I'm the kind of person who has no trouble walking around late at night. It's common for me to be out at 3-4 AM and I never even feel a little bit nervous, but last night at about 9:30 PM I got legitimately spooked for the first time since I moved here like 9 months ago.

I was walking through Stuy Town, which is that area with all those identical looking red brick housing project type buildings with a lot of trees and grass in between them. It was pretty dark there with the trees and all, and even though it was a Friday night there weren't that many people around.

I heard some footsteps approaching quickly behind me. They were quiet footsteps but they were quick. I looked a little bit to the side so I could see my own shadow, and the shadow of another person quickly approached mine, but suddenly slowed down RIGHT behind me, like a foot away, and matched my speed. Then I hear this really intimidating but soft exhale, like the sound that someone would make right before they go in for the kill.

I didn't even turn around, I just ran for 3 or 4 seconds than quickly took a turn around a corner and walked away rapidly.

Dang. I'm movin up there on Thursday for B school (NYU) and have been a little sketched about this sorta thing. I'm not familiar with that part of town ... what main neighborhoods is it near?

haha. sometimes I'm in a rush so I have to run to where I'm going (or I just don't feel like walking since it takes longer) and I usually slow down when I catch up to someone/don't pass them so that they don't think I'm some weird asshole. I will usually then walk past them for a little and then start running again.

idk maybe its just me but I feel like this is one of those sort of things. If that person wanted to kill you, they probably would have.

"Look, you're my best friend, so don't take this the wrong way. In twenty years, if you're still livin' here, comin' over to my house to watch the Patriots games, still workin' construction, I'll fuckin' kill you. That's not a threat, that's a fact.

Stupid banker you should just stay in the office.

Not a banker. Not even close.

Maybe you dropped something and they were about to return it

Nah, they would've definitely had said "excuse me" or something instead of trying to sneak up behind me.

Also it definitely wasn't my own shadow.

thats when you casually pull out your ka-bar and make it visible to the person behind you.

I envy anyone who lives in Stuy Town. It's gorgeous. I walked through the other night and they were showing Life of Pi. The basketball courts are the nicest in the city. It's like a college campus in Manhattan. It's not far from seedy areas but it's really safe. They have security that rides around at night and those lamps you can hit the button on for emergencies.

The guy who ran up on you may have been fucking with you to make his friends laugh.
