Investor Relations for IB SA Recruitment - Thoughts?

Hey all,

I'm currently a 2027 undergrad at a semi-target school looking to recruit for 2026 IB/PE SA roles in the US. Also open to recruiting for Private Credit roles. Entering the fall of my sophomore year, I'll be interning with the Investor Relations team at a decent-sized middle market private credit shop (15B+ AUM).

I'm wondering if I'll be able to spin my investor relations internship well enough (assuming I do everything else well like networking, nailing technicals, etc) to land an IB summer analyst internship at a BB or EB. A lot of upperclassmen who placed very well told me it would be hard since investor relations isn't an investing role, but I'm wondering if it's still possible considering this is a semi-well-known private credit shop and I'll be looking at a lot of their deals going on.

Thoughts/Advice/Suggestions? Anything is much appreciated, thank you.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some thoughts and advice for leveraging your Investor Relations internship for IB SA recruitment:

Key Points to Consider:

  1. Relevance of Experience:

    • While Investor Relations (IR) isn't directly an investing role, it still provides valuable exposure to financial markets, investor communications, and understanding of company financials.
    • Highlight any involvement in deal-related activities, financial analysis, or exposure to the firm's investment strategies.
  2. Networking:

    • Start networking early. Reach out to alumni, attend industry events, and connect with professionals in IB and PE.
    • Informational interviews can be a great way to build relationships and gain insights into the recruitment process.
  3. Technical Skills:

    • Ensure you are well-prepared with technical skills. Self-study financial modeling, valuation techniques, and other relevant technical skills.
    • Consider taking additional courses or certifications to bolster your technical knowledge.
  4. Positioning Your Experience:

    • Frame your IR experience in a way that highlights transferable skills such as financial analysis, communication with investors, and understanding of market dynamics.
    • Emphasize any quantitative work, such as financial modeling or analysis of financial statements, to show your analytical capabilities.
  5. Targeting Firms:

    • Focus on both BB (Bulge Bracket) and EB (Elite Boutique) firms, but also consider smaller regional boutique firms where your unique background might be more appreciated.
    • Tailor your applications to highlight how your specific experiences align with the firm's needs.

Actionable Steps:

  • Update Your Resume: Ensure your resume clearly reflects the skills and experiences gained during your IR internship.
  • Prepare for Interviews: Practice common IB interview questions, both technical and behavioral.
  • Leverage Your Network: Use LinkedIn and your school's alumni network to connect with professionals in the industry.
  • Stay Informed: Keep up with industry news and trends to demonstrate your genuine interest and knowledge during interviews.

Additional Resources:

  • WSO Courses and Guides: Consider using WSO's financial modeling courses and interview prep guides to enhance your preparation.
  • Mock Interviews: Participate in mock interviews to get feedback and improve your performance.

By strategically positioning your IR experience and supplementing it with strong networking and technical skills, you can improve your chances of landing an IB summer analyst internship. Good luck!

I interned in IR my sophomore summer and at a BB junior summer, and think there’s a very clear story to tell. You’ll say that it’s an exciting opportunity for sophomore year because IR is essentially a sell-side role within a buy-side firm. You’ll get to build the skillset and mindset of someone in sales, while getting exposure to a specific asset class and the broader fundraising environment.

Remember that even though we all join investment clubs to get into IB, the job itself is selling advisory services, not investing. Good luck!
