Not Updating LinkedIn - Bad Look?

Hey guys - was laid off about ~10 months ago from IB. I took a corporate job after being unable to find another finance gig to pay my rent.

This sounds really ridiculous, but I haven't updated my LinkedIn with my new role to avoid the shame of publicly advertising the downgrade in role and the lack of prestige of the company. I feel like my current coworkers are questioning this move, but my reasoning behind not updating is a) I don't think I'm going to be in this role for longer than a year if I can find something better, and ultimately just needed it to pay my rent and try to keep cash flow going and b) I'm still looking for other finance jobs more in line with my career goals without including my current job on my resume.

Is it possible that my current company would fire me over doing something like this? Maybe people don't care at all and I'm overthinking this, but wanted to get the forum's feedback. Thanks all.

You realize the company you are currently working for will show up on your background check right? I dont think your current company would give a fuck but you would be raising some huge red flags if you try to hide your current job.

Yeah the intern is wrong as usual, what you put on your LinkedIn is up to you and nobody cares, it's just a question of public image. Feel free to keep it that way if you're still interviewing / looking to make a move quickly. Wonder how your coworkers could be questioning your decision not to update your profile, do they stalk you on the regular? If asked just say you don't log in often

I wouldnt say I am an expert on how third party background check companies conduct their processes, but I would not risk it. Also, I still think it is much better to be employed, unless you are thinking about lying to potential employers that you were taking a break between jobs (another risk I personally would not take)

It’ll show up via credit checks if you applied for any credit while employed at your current employer or if you updated your job with existing creditors.

It may show up there without you applying for credit but I’d check on this point. I for sure thought I didn’t apply for credit while at one job but it showed up anyway. This is a long time ago but just giving you a heads up.

Good majority of my employment history and externship have been off-the-cuff contracts and friends-of-friends giving me cooler buyouts. In fact I worked for a supreme fund in college but the company wanted us to work completely free because they didn't feel like doing I9s or whatever.

Am I fucked? Should I only put the (insanely feeble!) experience from corporate cog jobs in my CVs?

Doesn't matter for LinkedIn. Matters for resume/background checks as it's verified based on W-4 / income tax data which is and will be verified, just fyi. Will raise red flags if you get an offer, and it shows your most recent job was what you are currently doing and you never brought it up. Just own up to the downgrade, learn how to craft a good story from it, and update your resume/linkedin with it...
