Private Capital Advisory (Career Change/Path)

Hello Everyone,

I’m hoping to seek some guidance on a potential career change.

I graduated from a non-target school with a finance degree in 2016 and have been in PE fund operations for the last five years. I’m hoping to make a career change to private capital advisory or possibly make an internal transfer at my current firm to the IR/capital raising team. I’m currently employed at a secondaries fund manager with almost 6bn AUM.

I like my firm a lot and it’s great exposure all across all teams, but I don’t see myself doing accounting/ops for the rest of my career. I had a brief off-cycle internship at a placement agent
right after undergrad, but given my school ranking and lack of connections, I was unable to obtain a full time offer or land other sell side roles.

I’m currently trying to network as much as possible but if that fails, do I need to go back to school and pursue an MBA or MSF at a target business school? Would attending modeling boot camps and other industry specific designations help me market my skills? Any help/ tips would be greatly appreciated.
