Sagent Advisors - How are exit opps?

Does anyone on here have some info on Sagent? All I know they are pretty legit and are a notch below HW, RWB, WB etc

I read some of the older threads but wanted to see how they are doing now. How do they compare to other MM firm like Stifel,, gca. Is it worth taking a Sagent offer over Wells Fargo or Piper?

How are the exit opps to MM PE or VC...HF? I know it might not be as good as HW or Jefferies but is it still possible?

how about lateral to BB?

depending on your group

sagent sends people out to PE regularly. You are not going to get TPG KKR of the world but something that around 1b+ is def doable. several people from the nyc office have done just that. Do a linkedin search.

VC if you are in the charlotte or sf office, very tough to hf as most guys have never heard of sagent as it doesn't have a cap market group that sells deals to some of the multi strate guys

However, the hitter in sf (the only guy bringing the deal to be honest in sf tech) just left to hw to become the head of tmt there. Also, analysts are leaving before 2 years are up because they aren't happy with the super lean structure which basically crushes the analyst (the ratio of MD to analysts is absurd). That being said, you do get compensated and you will get a good exp in sagent but I wouldn't take it with a light heart.

take it over stifle, gca, wells, piper anyday. However, jef might be a toss-up depending on who you like better and the group you are going to be placed in. Jef is know for its healthcare, lev fin and tech.

Ricqlesi am pretty familiar with the sf office due to work experience. What do you want to know about it

I guess how are the guys there, how big is there group, exit opps, deal flow, culture, not too worried about hours....how many of those hours are actual work ie do days go by fast or are guys playing comp games in the office until 5pm until they get work?

ok..answering to the best of my knowledge but this should be pretty accurate since i worked with these guys before and know the "poor bastard" phantom is talking about

group is divided into healthcare and tech, not sure if you would come in as generalist or tech/healthcare-focused. Dealflow not too sure but i am assuming not as good as before since the hitter left. Culture...the analyst seemed pretty relaxed and the vp is pretty cool. Not sure about actual work / playing comp games but the analyst seem pretty busy overall...

exit oppo is not really reflective of the group. They only have one analyst getting out so far (the poor bastard, again) so the overall exit oppos are not really accurate because of one sample.

oldmansacks, from what I know, Sagent's SF is very small, with 1 or 2 analysts. And the rainmaker just jumped to HW. One of my buddies interviewed with them last year, and apparently they had only one analyst (poor bastard) for a while.

The question is, do you have any offers? If no, then stop masturbating and comeback when you get some If only Sagent, take it If Sagent and something else, then there is a room for discussion

Also, Sagent NY is full of ex-DLJ guys, so cannot go wrong with that office.

not sure why he left, but i think he's going to the buyside. He was a first year so i guess not and the ones who started this year were the new analysts i assume

I wouldnt put Sagent or Savvian under wb,he,Jeff etc.

Sagent/Savvian are very good at what they do, and if you're interested in growth/hc/tech, I'd take those firms over most if not all other middle market banks. Obviously besides Qatalyst ms gs etc. Good luck

Culture varies by office - the place used to have a better culture, but since the deals don't come as easily, and the ranks have ramped up, it certainly can be sweatshop hours depending which group/who you work for.

ny office has ramped up MDs very heavily in last 9 months - and yes analysts left quite early due to culture/workload. they paid street i believe last summer in ny, not sure about this summer.

Out of curiosity, how are MM league tables shaping up for YTD 2011? I don't have access to Merger Market/Pitchbook anymore, but would be interested to get an idea what you current monkeys are seeing in the market place.

Specifically related to this thread, has Sagent seen a noticeable drop off since the MD left for HW (likely not yet reported on league tables as nothing would have closed, but interesting nonetheless)?

it has. But still a great place to work at. The guys are all nice there and you can learn a lot. However, again, don't expect the kkr, tpg exits.

You have to remember Sagent was founded in 2004 or something. There's been very little precedent for exits. I'd imagine them to be pretty good though.

buzzcockdo they have any street cred?

Does this really matter? Shouldn't you be concerned with the work you'll do and the responsibilities and skills you'll gain that you can substantially talk about in interviews (assuming you're interested in exit opps, given your earlier post)?

Sorry, I'm not trying to sound rude. It just seems like you're taking your eye off the ball.

great boutique that's mostly middle market, the md's are all very senior and have tons of experience, you'll get a lot of responsibility right away, and also the analysts have a lot of fun... tight-knit group. Very young company, expanding fast.

i believe he means 70 base, and maybe higher upside in bonus potential

and i believe its actually pretty average hours wise, i've heard actually less than average though
