Transferring back to NY office from London (Bulge Bracket)
I am an Ivy League graduate ('13)/American citizen who got an internship at a bulge bracket investment bank for the summer in London. However, I want to transfer back to NY asap. What's the best way to go about this?
Obviously, I would have to get a return offer first. (Right?)
Since I'm already past the OCR phase, how would I reach out to other firms - I don't mind working at another bank.
Furthermore, I want to switch to PE and their recruiting starts in my first year.
With your bank you need to a) get an offer; once you have it, make clear you want to go back to your country for serious reasons. Try to leverage on your reputation as an hard worker to convince your team that you are an asset for them even though you will be in the other side of the atlantic. If you did extremelly well, people will sponsor you to the people that they know in the other teams in NY. That said, it is not easy and it was not a smart move to look for an internship in London, missing OCR, if you were not 100% committed to stay there for at least 2 years.

I interned with a girl who was on her year abroad and didn't want to stay in London. She received a return offer but HR wasn't too welcoming to her "I'm American, I want to go back." Without a good reasons, you might be expected to do the 2 years. FYI, her performance was average so no one went to bat for her.

So just to be clear, you graduated in May '13, and you got an internship for summer '15? Naturally, the first question that comes to mind is what have you been doing for two years.

May I ask Why do you want to leave London?
Based on my Ivy League network, U.S's superior economic climate (which translates to many things including conversion rates, opportunities in PE/HF), general savings from living in NY over London, it is more advantageous for me to transfer.

Not that uncommon, BB's and any multinational wil have a lot of experience in doing this. I did this move last year, obviously depends on your role etc but i know quite a lot of people who have moved in both directions.
Thanks for the reply. Sorry I forgot to say which role - I will be in IBD. Is it more common to do after a few years in your original location or can you sort it our pretty soon after joining?

Just a follow-up regarding this topic, if you transfer to NY, is it usually assumed to be on a permanent basis (and can you participate in buy-side recruiting in NY?) or do just go back to the UK after 1 year?
It's normally on an intra company transfer visa, i think the standard length of this visa is three years which you can then renew for another three years. However, if you want to participate in buy side recruiting you will need to get your new employer to sponsor you for that.
I know that RS sends you back to London.
