UMiami vs. GWU for Finance B.S.
I am a current high school senior right now and am trying to choose between the two schools. Which one has more OCR for BB banks and makes it easier to get a job at one of these firms? I know GW has government contracting advisor Deloitte frequently come to recruit, so firms like that are also what I am looking for.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, when comparing the University of Miami (UM) and George Washington University (GWU) for a Finance B.S. with a focus on opportunities in investment banking and firms like Deloitte, it's important to consider several factors including on-campus recruiting (OCR), alumni network, and the presence of finance-related opportunities in their respective locations.
For the University of Miami, the context provided highlights: - Investment Banking opportunities in Miami are almost non-existent, with a few boutiques offering internships that rarely turn into full-time offers. However, there are financial shops in nearby areas like Ft. Lauderdale, Boca, and West Palm that recruit for full-time roles on a need-based basis. - The presence of Private Equity (PE) and Hedge Funds (HF) in Miami is noted, with some entry-level opportunities occasionally popping up. These positions are mostly lateral hires from well-known banks. - The University of Miami offers a real estate concentration and a master's in real estate, indicating strong on-campus recruiting for real estate development, property management, PE, etc. - For positions in Private Wealth Management (PWM) and corporate finance, having language skills in Spanish/Portuguese can be advantageous, especially for roles in Miami. The university has connections in New York City (NYC) and organizes networking trips there.
Regarding George Washington University (GWU), the context does not provide specific information. However, GWU's location in Washington D.C. offers unique advantages, especially for students interested in government-related finance positions, consulting, and advisory roles. The proximity to government agencies and contractors, including advisory firms like Deloitte, can provide valuable internship and job opportunities in these sectors.
In summary, if your primary goal is to pursue a career in investment banking, especially with Bulge Bracket (BB) banks, it's crucial to consider the overall finance ecosystem of the school's location, alumni network, and specific finance-related opportunities available through OCR. While UM offers certain finance opportunities, especially in real estate and PWM, GWU's location in D.C. might offer more in terms of consulting and government-related finance roles. Networking and leveraging alumni connections will be key in both cases.

Currently at UMiami. My friends and I who recruited IB and MBB consulting all had success (BBs, couple EBs, buyside, top hf interviews, etc). Join TAMID, join TargetCanes, and apply for Bermont Carlin. If you are aiming for IB/high finance there are plenty of resources here for success as well as a solid alumni network in the industry

Yup happy to chat
Nice was it relatively easy or are u the 1%
Getting IB is generally not that difficult if you’re intentional about it but EB and BB opps are gonna require more networking and a solid resume. Feel free to pm
Currently at UMiami. Solid school that offers decent connections to large banks. Every year more kids have broken into IB, so the program is only becoming stronger. If you work hard and have a strong GPA your name can be in the hat easily.
Hey you should change your user - easy to dox
Is there anyone here that has attended GWSB (GW School of Business) and has some insight on the finance major there?
Go to Miami. Easy choice. You can easily get into banking if you do the following: 1) Keep a high GPA, 2) join the Finance clubs (especially Bermont-Carlin), 3) land a local internship in Miami (lots of Family Offices, REPE, and LMM/Boutique PEs) as a sophomore, 4) network extensively with alumni. Citi recruits on campus and there are young alumni at each BB and many other major banks. Placement has been great the last ~4 years.
I was class of 22' and in my class alone we have people at Citi (a ton), JPM, Barclays, GS, FT Partners, Piper, Harris Williams, William Blair, etc. The more recent classes have had even better results.
