Undergrad advice, given my background

I'm currently a sophomore in college, and I have a few questions about what it takes to get an internship or FT offer at a BB. Before I ask my questions, here's some background information:

  • Sophomore at HYPS
  • Economics major
  • GPA: 3.3 departmental, 3.0 cum.
  • Varsity athlete (Sept. - Jun. training, and I will remain on the team until I graduate)
  • No previous finance work experience
  • Summer plans: LSE summer program

My question is concerning two different scenarios: (i) I fail to bring my departmental and cumulative GPAs up much further from where they hover right now, and (ii) I apply with a 3.5 departmental and a 3.2 cum. How might my chances be for a summer internship next year, and for a full time offer senior year if I fail to secure a summer internship but work in finance elsewhere? Besides the obvious, bringing my GPA up as much as I can, what can I do to increase my chances? Also please note that first semester of freshman year is hurting my cumulative; without it, my cum. is just above a 3.3.

Thanks for your help.

maybe write a note in your cover letter or somewhere how the rigors of being a varsity athlete were a huge strain on your time and made it difficult to succeed academically

banks love varsity athletes

Thanks for the advice. Are you currently in banking or are you just basing that on your athlete friends' experiences in getting internships?

Also, how would a bank view a 3.7 departmental coupled with a 3.1 cum? I'm only in my first departmental course this semester, and if I can swing an A or A-, it would put my departmental GPA up there.
