Vaccine Religious Exemption for Interns

I have sincere religious beliefs (Eastern Orthodox Christianity) that prohibit me from receiving mRNA vaccinations. I am currently unvaccinated and have not had any issues at my target university since requesting an exemption. Will I have any issues during my SA stint with attempting to request an exemption? Will be NYC based.

Lol fuck you.

You're easily expendable, and people don't want to work with an unvaxxed kid who thinks he can get away with mandates due to a "religious exemption". You're replaceable and the firm can easily find someone else who won't cause this much of a stir.

The exemption is for senior bankers who actually bring value to the firm, not idiot interns like you

I don't see how this will cause a stir. Whether or not I am vaccinated doesn't affect anyone else in the office, considering that they do nothing to prevent transmissibility. I will get Novavax or another vaccine that complies with my religious beliefs once they come out, if that puts the rest of my team at ease.

The current pope is an embarrassment for Catholics all around.

Anyone can clearly see the guy is more interested in new world order type policies rather than standing up for the faith or its policies.

If he can't even condemn the current Catholic political leaders (Pelosi, Biden, etc.) over their stance on abortion (the literal murder of babies and one of the strongest positions held by the Catholic church), how can anyone take him seriously on anything else?

I'm disturbed by the fact that people think I should suffer career damage for my personal beliefs, especially when being vaccinated does nothing to prevent COVID transmission and doesn't increase their personal risk. I guess that's the state of the world we live in though. Thankful to be an American right now, despite my fellow countrymen attacking my rights.

I don't particularly care to return to the firm that I have an offer from. I'm fairly confident about my ability to land at a similarly good shop or MFPE firm FT if I decide to re-recruit. Hopefully by then vaccine mandates will cease to exist and I won't have to worry about my career being hindered by them.

Controversial

OP, don't mind the disparaging comments above. Anyone who is obsessed with forcing you to get the vaccine is either a radical, unhinged leftist (which is ironic in itself because what happened to my body my choice?) or simply regretful that they didn't think to get an exemption themselves.

Moreover, you are totally right that you not being vaccinated should not be an issue for anyone in the office because it doesn't prevent transmissibility. Also, back in the days of sanity, vaccines were actually effective and safe due to years of development and experimentation. Back then, it was simple. If you wanted to protect yourself from a particular disease, then you would get a vaccine for said disease and actually be "immunized." Afterwards, because you were already protected, there was no need to make authoritarian mandates because unvaccinated people only posed a risk to them and themselves only. It's only in today's crazy world of decaying westernization that we see an obsession with irrational, compulsory vaccination. May it have anything to do with the multiple shots, low effectiveness, and potential side effects? Thus, some people who got it feel that it's only fair for others to take on the burden as well. As for you not being a "team player" if you don't get it, I'd say this statement is probably the most dangerous version of Orwellian groupthink that I have heard in a while. If this kind of culture exists at any firm, you probably don't want to be working there in the first place.

As for your original question, the good news is that most mandates are finally getting revoked (even in communist NYC, as hard to believe as that may be: this is also probably why people who reluctantly got it are now even more irritated and liable to criticize individuals like yourself). I believe the latest news included the revocation of mask and vaccine mandates across the city. I imagine these things are still required in some institutions and firms who have taken it upon themselves to enforce the mandates on their own. However, with city imposed mandates ending, it should probably be easier to obtain an exemption even if a mandate at a firm still stands, especially if you mention that you already had an exemption at your school.

Likewise, thank you for remaining sane. I think it has to do with this current generation of young degenerates who are obsessed with fitting in and lack the ability to think critically.

Most NYC Republicans are what I call "low taxes Republicans." Meaning they vote R due to low taxes and business deregulation but that's it. They are socially liberal, and you wouldn't be able to tell them apart from an establishment Democrat just by looking at their social views.

Many banks will not let you in the office if you're unvaccinated, even if you have an exemption. You should be able to get a religious exemption and work this summer, but don't be surprised if they require you to work from home - which kind of sucks when your whole team is in the office.

Also to your comments above, if you don't get a return offer for any reason, you will absolutely struggle to get a similar tier IB offer and MF PE for FT is almost certainly out - even if you're at a target and a great candidate, they have lines out the door of people with return offers...

The Russian Orthodox Church has provided synodical guidance on how Orthodox Christians should interact with the medical community and with medications in general. As part of that guidance, the Russian Church says that any medication based on (i) aborted fetal cells, (ii) tissue harvested from any subject without his/her explicit consent and/or (iii) any medication that changes genetic structure/the genome, are to be avoided by faithful Orthodox Christians. The mRNA vaccines were not only tested in aborted fetal cells for safety/stability, but the underlying lipid nanoparticle technology was developed in aborted cells. The J&J manufacturing process involves aborted fetal cells, and therefore is more explicitly dependent on aborted cells. A recent study was published by Swedish scientists demonstrating that RNA from the mRNA vaccines are transmuted into DNA in our liver cells.

In a nut shell, for Russian Orthodox Christians, there's plenty of room to object to these vaccines on religious grounds. Same is true for Romanians, Serbs, Moldovans, etc. The Greek Church has taken another approach, more similar to that of the Catholic Church.

Without knowing the bank I don’t think anyone but your firm’s HR can tell you the answer to this question. If you’re saying you can’t get an mRNA vaccine, if it’s a problem would you get a conventional one?

I’m also genuinely curious as to why not mRNA on the religious front? I am not interested in a scientific answer, I’ve just never heard a theological reason that differentiates between vaccine variants.

If you are choosing to remain unvaccinated, you are volunteering to be a petri dish for future variants. And not everyone will survive a future nasty variant. Isn't there anything in your religion about kindness/ compassion to others? And do you forego all medications, where a life was sacrificed? Or does an animal life not matter? Just curious if your religious text has all this laid out or there are nuanced interpretations you rely upon for your rationalization.

Hardly. If you do, please do share. I am open to understanding why you would be willing to take a medicine derived from killing/ experimenting on animals but have an objection to a medicine derived from dead tissue. Does your religion have a hierarchy for value on life? An arbitrary cutoff that deems acceptable certain medicines but not others? And would you decline an mRNA based medicine that is the only cure to a terminal illness? If you decline it, does that amount to suicide and is that cool by your religious credo?

1. Delta and Omicron reportedly originated from India and South Africa. Places with very low vaccination rates, back when the variants emerged.

2. A vaccinated body is less likely to nurture a variant, when compared to an unvaccinated body. AFAIK.

I have a lot of respect for Orthodox Christianity. Do not let people here bother you. Most are atheists and jerks, as is true with IB in general. Stay strong and remember that your faith (and health given the Pfizer documents) is more important than money or prestige.

I know many who were able to obtain a religious exemption. Be steadfast and don’t falter when faced with passive aggressive statements or frustrating bureaucratic procedures, and you will likely receive a vaccine exemption.

NPCs everywhere… how light is the yolk of your COVID religion?
