Which banks issue laptops for IBD analysts?
Hey guys,
Which banks issue laptops for their FT IBD analysts? I'm starting at a BB firm in the next several months and am trying to decide whether I need to buy a pc for personal and work use.

Career Resources
Ask HR. They should be able to let you know.
You won't be "allowed" to do work on a personal computer given the sensitivity of the information, they don't even allow you to email files to your gmail account, etc.
This is defnitely 100% false. As TechBanking mentioned, we frequently log in from home using VPN/Secure Token...
I only know of Credit Suisse, but you're not gonna take it home.
I know WFC does as well. I'd be surprised if there's a BB/elite boutique/respectable MM that doesn't issue laptops given the heavy workload and its time sensitive nature.
This.
Maybe things have changed, but you used to absolutely be able to log-in from your home laptop through a VPN and a secure ID for BB IBD jobs. Most analysts had desktops at the office and their own laptops at home so they could get minor projects and email done without having to go into the office. For travel we were allowed to check out a laptop from IT. Associates and above were generally given laptops.
Maybe check with HR or reach out to an analyst that is currently working at your firm to ask about this.
Do BB guys not travel that much? I would not be able to do my job without a laptop.
Do BB analysts not get to go to pitches, diligence sessions, or management presentations?
You're a managing director?
MM analyst. We travel for all of the above and are expected to contribute, not just attend. I figured BB analysts had less client and buyer interaction, just surprises me that it's so little. Guess that's why MM guys are often stereotyped as "good at running a process, but not good at running a model," and vice versa for BB analysts.
So why does your icon say Managing Director... not that I care, but kids on this site take advice from people based on the differentiation between industry professional and not, certified user and not, and then the hierarchy...
so if i will be working at a top BB, should i assume that i will not be given a laptop, and will have to do any work from home on a personal computer?
I can guarantee that 95% of investment banks provide laptops.
To clarify, at my BB they issued laptops to each analyst and you would log in from home using VPN because they didn't want the bank's proprietary information being used on a personal computer. Apparently that's not the case everywhere

You shouldn't assume anything, this is a question suitable for human resources.
In my experience, and every other friend I have that's in banking, you are issued a laptop with a dock at work. Usually you can get a large wide-screen LCD and your own keyboard/mouse so it's not just an annoying laptop. When you need to work out of office, you undock the laptop and go on your way. Still can access all the drives from anywhere as long as you have WiFi. I would never do work on my personal computer.
^This. you should still have your personal computer though. I have a desktop for gaming and stuff.
almost all BB's will give laptops unless you have a desktop at work.
Thanks to whoever shit on me in this thread; I was just trying to provide some honest insight as a former BB analyst. As I said, maybe things have changed since I was an analyst, which by the way was a number of years ago.
Back in the day we didn't get issued our own laptops, and this was the case at every BB at that time. Apparently, times have changed.
Do associates get a laptop ? (Originally Posted: 04/02/2007)
