Which Would You Prefer

Hey everyone,

Was hoping to get outside insight. If you were ~24 years old and had the option, would you rather exit to a corporate finance role at FAANG, or exit to a UMM/MF PE firm (as an Associate). Having an argument with a senior friend who says she'd rather do the prior (which I personally think is ludicrous at this young of an age), but I cant make a convincing claim for the latter, as I don't know the facts about FAANG Corp Fin. How much of a pay cut would it be relative to an IBD Analyst position? Is the opportunity for career progression even remotely comparable to that which someone would experience as a UMM/MF Associate?

Thank you in advance.

Progression/comp will be greater for 2 years but then most PE associates leave. What about after that?

Wdym what about after that? You have the option to stay in PE and continue making incomparably more money than you would at FAANG (not to mention incomparable career progression potential). If you truly want to exit, you can hit bschool, Hedge Funds, FAANG, etc. Literally any industry out there would kill to have you should you want them, and they would accept you into a higher role 2 years out of PE compared to 2 years out of FAANG. The rigor, skills, experience you obtain in IB/PE is lifelong and so diverse that if you just don’t fuck up, you will be a top candidate for any future employer.

I disagree with your last sentence here (at least when it comes to banking). Having done a two-year analyst stint in banking and now at a tech firm, I’ve learned way more in tech. I have a lot more responsibility and the job requires way more independent thinking than in banking, where so much of what you do is following instructions and doing stupid work like formatting. Not that you don’t learn useful skills in banking, but the skill set you gain (outside of the ability to grind) is not really all that special.

Hey if you don't mind me asking, what was the comp difference between IB and your current tech role? How do the hours differentiate also?
