Quant-heavy positions in business besides i-banking/trading/etc. (Originally Posted: 04/15/2009)
Hi,
I was wondering what are some quant-heavy fields within business aside from trading, some investment banking positions, etc. that people from non-target schools can get into? Although I'd like to get into a quant position at a trading or BB investment bank, realistically, that's not going to happen since I go to a non-target, so what are some other fields in business that require a lot of math/statistics, but are more reasonably attainable for someone who does not go to a target school, and probably can't get onto wallstreet directly from undergrad? I've heard about actuaries, but are there positions in F500 firms that like people with a background in mathematics?
thanks

risk management for f500 and banks.
risk management, although good risk management at say.. DB or JPM are very hard to get in and they only recruit at target schools
Since when has risk management been hard to get in? I went to a target and I don't remember seeing too many risk-management roles. I do know they earn the same base that we do and work half the hours. Bastards.
Actuaries can be well paid, but I heard the field is somewhat boring. It's a form of risk management.
risk has always been the ugly brother of FO roles such banking or trading. it has its perks such as better hours and less demanding work, but the bonus is almost nill and base is comparable. also, if shit hits the fan, it's usually the risk manager that gets fucked.
now if you are talking about actuary, that work is pretty boring, but the pay is quite a bit higher than risk especially since pay is to a large extent determined by how many actuarial exams you've passed.
question about actuaries:
Does going to a target school matter for this profession?
Do they still use some finance/econ/accounting, or is it just math?
What are the good companies to work for besides DW Simpson
Answers to questions above:
1) No it does not. 2) They will require some basic finance/econ skills which you can easily learn by yourself 3) The big four, Milliman & Towers Perrin (as far as client base goes)
The pay starts off with 60K usually, but I believe future earnings typically follow the accounting pay trajectory (Big 4).
what about operations research? is that a good field as well?
